Agriturismo, Italy (north of Rome)

I'm looking for recommendations for agriturismos in Italy north of Rome. I'm looking for convenience (close as possible to the train route), lodging comfort, interesting surroundings, dinners prepared from local produce and cooking classes would be an added bonus. Any suggestions?

Can you give a bit more of an idea as to what area or sort of area you would like? Near the sea? In the mountains? In Tuscany?

Saying you want something north of Rome is like asking someone to suggest where you should go east of Chicago.

My favorite town on the north side of Rome is Orvieto--70 minutes from Termini by train. It's a beautiful hilltown, and the train station is next to a funicular taking you up into the city. I would be looking for a bed and breakfast over an agriturismo since you won't have a car.

TripAdvisor has a bunch of really fine bed and breakfasts for this town--many within walking distance of the center city. I have heard B&B CasaSelita mentioned positively many times online, and they're also listed on Booking.com. www.casaselita.com

Tivoli or Frascati are even closer than Orvieto. Since an agriturismo is a working farm, and farms need space, convenience to public transportation is rare.

Do you plan to come into Roma every day? It can be a long trek from the outlying cities. The website Elegant Etruria features a number of partners (check that link on the banner) and is focused in the areas north of Roma, particularly near Viterbo. However, I would not want to make the trek into Roma every day from that far out.

In San Gemini check out http://www.palazzosantiterzi.it/casadelpoggio.htm

and Google cooking schools in San Gemini.

We hired Daniella to cook a dinner or two for us and ate at local restaurants otherwise. Because you are directly in downtown you walk anywhere for eating and drinking. It is a small town but you get a very good feel for Italian life.

I forgot to say that travel to Rome Termini by train from Narni is easy from San Gemini. You will need a rental car though.

I would highly recommend Antica Olivaia outside of Orvieto. We had a wonderful stay in June. The owners Daniella and Marco go out of their way to make you feel at home. The setting is stunning, the accommodation lovely and the food is delicious. You would need to rent a car as they are about 15 minutes outside Orvieto. Feel free to email me with any questions. Here's their website:
