I have visited Volterra a couple of times while staying in an agrotourism accommodation in Radda in Chianti. It was a lovely place right across the street from endless vineyards and they offered their wines for sale. Of course we took advantage of the Rose on a warm summer evening!

Have you been to this area in Tuscany?

I checked their website and it looks lovely. It's just north of Volterra, which is a lovely town. It has an underground parking garage and other parking near the north gate. As I'm sure you know, it is also very convenient for exploring from Lucca in the north to Siena in the south and Florence in the east.
I think Tuscany is best explored by car. Driving in Tuscany is easy and fun, but if you plan to visit Florence, park at the airport or the suburbs and take a bus to the city center.

We spent a lovely week in an agriturismo just north of Greve, which is 22 kilometers south of Florence. Like Marcampo, Castillo di Verrazzano is a winery. Although I have no personal knowledge of Marcampo, I say go for it!

I've been to Siena but not Volterra. This agriturismo comes highly recommended by a friend who has been there and made friends with the owners. But we will not have a car: my sister & I plan to do Rome, Florence, Volterra and south to Capri/Amalfi. Unless we can fly into Florence and out of Naples, we'll probably have to do RT Rome. In 2019 my husband and I did Rome, train to Naples/Sorrento,Capri, then to Siena, then train to Venice, then train back to Rome for return flight. We felt it was alot of time on the train (wasted?) but not sure of an alternative that would work for us this time. I don't think this 2022 trip can include Venice; now my sister wants to see if we can do Sicily! No, time and funds are NOT unlimited! comments/suggestions welcome! Thanks, all.

cissyboca, how much time do you have? Volterra is a long way from Sicily, and Sicily itself is worth at least a week, probably more. What other towns or areas are you considering?

How long will you have? I'd need at least four weeks for that itinerary.

Keep in mind that getting to and from a large city like Siena is completely different from getting to and from an agriturismo in the countryside that's near a small town. If you plan to stay there, do some detailed planning regarding transportation to see if it is feasible. Trains don't run to all the small towns. Bus routes are also not prevalent. Some places may have infrequent bus service. Private transportation can be expensive.

You mentioned spending a lot of time on the train. Given your aggressive itinerary I'm wondering if your prior travels have been where you move frequently from one place to another, changing every day or two. If that is your plan for next time, I highly encourage you to entertain a different way. When we went to Tuscany, we had one base for the entire week. There was no place we visited that was more than an hour away. The last trip we took was for two weeks. We spent an entire week in one B&B in the small French town of Loches, then we went to London for a week on a business trip for Deb.

These trips were far more enjoyable and enriching than scurrying about. Too often travelers try to see everything and end up really seeing nothing.
