Our first trip to Tuscany... looking for a central location for a week tour...need a home base...we will be renting a car
after a day tour of Florence...moderate price range...help...
Just got back two weeks ago. We did one agri just outside of Orvieto for 4 nites and one in Chianti for two nites. ( I would have liked to stay for at least three in Chianti, but the travel siren called, and we had to move on.)
Both were absolutely fabulous places, that allowed us to roam about, see the local (hill) towns, and drive to different restaurant each nite.
Both were spacious self-contained apts. One was $75 EU./nite, and the other was $65 EU. Both had pools and owners that spoke excellent English and who would spend any amount of time giving you tips about the local area.
We found Agri Frallarenza (Orvieto area) on RS, and Agri Borgo Sicelle on Trip Advisor. We checked out both on TA. Both exceeded our expectations.
Have not stayed here yet, but planning to in Sept.
Sure looks good from the website. Centrally located near Pienza for visiting hill towns, ie Montecino, Montelpulciano, Siena, and many others.

In May 2009 we spent a week at LaCrociana which is just outside Montalcino. The location was perfect for visiting many hill towns, Banfi Winery, Santimo Abbey, etc. We actually had a small apartment which was spacious and nicely furnished. It has a pool and they will do laundry for you. All this was only 60 euros a night. Owners are very gracious but have limited English--not a problem though. Found it in RS Guidebook--the website is good.
Bob,
There really is no place central to see all of Tuscany. You should limit driving by picking one area of Tuscany to visit. I like southern Tuscany. This will give you some ideas http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/hs_planning.htm
