How lovely. The without a car part will make things difficult to experience the hill towns or agritourism in Italy. I've found from my trip planning that Cortona is accessible by train and there are lots of great lodging options around town. Maybe you can take a taxi from the train to the farm. You might also look into some options around Orvieto (near Rome). From here you could also take a taxi for a reasonble-ish price.

Bob,

We had a car. But I've heard others say that these folks will pick you up at the train in Orvieto... I believe that. They bend over backwards to make sure their guests are happy!

I like Steve's idea. You just can't experience the countyside if you can't drive there. That is why we chose to use a rental car for our two week trip to Tuscany/Umbria, and Sardinia. We just returned this week.

While there we stayed at a wonderful Agri outside of Orvieto called Frallarenza. Only two rooms/ apts. Quiet, and beautiful. Our huge self contained apt only cost $75 EU nite for the two of us, and was close enough to Orvieto that we could drive in each nite for dinner; but not close enough to use the services of a cab.

The car allwed us to easily explore all of the surrounding hill towns, whcih were just absolutly fantastic.

Bob, Check out "Casa Selita B&B" in Orvieto...this just might be the experience your looking for with out a car. We plan to stay there for the same reason as you.

Hi Bob. It's really not very feasible without a car. We stayed at a wonderful agriturismo in Siena (10 min drive to the city walls) and while we took a taxi into Siena for a day and didn't take the car, we certainly would not have been able to visit other towns without a car. Is there a reason you don't want to rent a car? I was a little nervous about it but my husband was cool as a cucumber & didn't mind driving at all. We took our Garmin gps with us & found it really enjoyable to drive to different towns each day. I would never dare to drive in Rome or Florence but in Tuscany/Umbria, it was very easy. Have a great trip.
