Trains aren't as good as good as buses in Sicily. Avis and EuropCar have offices in Siracusa, one on Ortigia, the other just over the bridge into Siracusa.
Agrigento is on the other side of Sicily from Siracusa so a good distance. We met people in our Agrigento hotel who had arrived by train from Palermo. They were having difficulty getting to and from the Valley of the Temples and the Archeological museum without a car.

You aren't by any chance going to Ragusa, are you? Rome2Rio is telling me there's a train+bus option to Agrigento with the transfer in Gela. Ragusa is one of the stops on the way from Siracusa to Gela. I am not suggesting a short stop-over in Ragusa. I anticipate luggage-storage difficulties. But you could spend a night in Ragusa and have part of a day there, then continue on to Gela, where you'd switch to a bus.

Note: Do not trust the travel times, frequencies or fares shown on Rome2Rio. I don't think they make them up, but it seems that way. You need to dig down to find the name of the company providing the bus (or train) service and go to its website for more reliable information. Be very careful about the day of the week. Not a lot of inter-city buses leave the terminal on Sundays and holidays.

Traveling by bus via Catania looks like the fastest option. It appears, though, that you'll be dealing with two different bus companies. I'd probably opt for the train even though it probably will take a bit longer.

Do not despair; I found the Sicilian interior quite attractive.
