Agrigento overnight or day trip from Palermo?

10 day itinerary! 3 nights Taormina, 3 nights Syracuse , 3 nights Palermo. Is it worth cutting down on a day in Palermo to spend a night and a day in Agrigento? Or should I leave it out of our itinerary . First time in Sicily.

I think it is worth it just for la valle dei templi on its own. In my opinion, if you decide to visit it, it's better to go late afternoon. At sunset that place is magical.

Sicily is a great destination with lots of options. The ruins at Agrigento are both impressive and beautiful. I would try to fit them into your journey but I would cut a day from Taormina, not Palermo. But I always make archeological sites a priority and you need to judge your level of interest. Do you plan to visit the Greek and Roman ruins at Segesta? That is a very easy daytrip from Palermo and if so, then maybe that is enough and you can keep your original 3 +3 + 3 plan. In my opinion Agrigento is too far to do as a daytrip from Palermo if you are using public transportation. If you hire a driver it is probably doable. Are you entering Sicily through Catania and exiting from Palermo? You don’t want to backtrack. If you cut a day from Taormina can you stay a night at Agrigento on your way from Siracusa/Ortigia to Palermo? The other big factor is transportation. Are you driving or planning to use busses and trains?

There is a lot to see in Palermo. Two nights there would be only one full day and a few hours.

We plan to go to Agrigento from Palermo for a day trip only.
The train takes two hours, but we won't have a car and we do like trains.

We spent two nights in Agrigento, but we had more time than you. For planning only, assume you’ll spend 3-4 hours visiting the temples, more if you go to the museum. I think you have one night too many in Taormina, but it’s your trip.
