Agrigento day trip; Sicily Itineray tweeking

For those following my travel planning, we have to reschedule our original Sicily trip from May to October/November. We still
wish not to drive at this point.

We visited Rome 15 years ago! We're not rebooking air until we confirm an itinerary. Original lodgings are available for October right now so I'm trying to firm this up this coming week.

New itinerary idea:
3/4 Palmero
5/6 Trapani
7 Taormina
4 Rome

1) Is a day trip to Agrigento easier from Trapani or Palmero? Originally, we'd plan to spend 1 night Agrigento.
From either base we could arrange a private tour or try a small sized group tour. So we'd add an extra night in one of those bases.
Any suggestions on what tour guide/company to use from these bases?

2) Agrigento as an overnight stay: From Trapani we'd take the bus, settle into hotel, do a guided tour in the afternoon, and enjoy time there in the evening. Anyone have experience with Toursbylocals.com?

3) If we stayed overnight in Agrigento, the next day we'd take the bus to Catania airport. There our contact for our apartment rental can pick us up. Is there a more efficient way to get to Catania or directly to Taormina?

I suggest you look at Rome2Rio.com for transportation alternatives; there are links to schedules. Trapani requires a train and bus to Agrigento, Palermo has a direct train.

I can't help with the Agrigento tour, but the archeological zone is huge.
