Wow, it's looking like it's going to be too difficult for us to get from Spello to Urbino by bus or train. We have a week to spend after leaving Spello on May 15 before going to Bologna for 3 nights. We fly home to the US from Bologna. Does anyone have any suggestions for a place to spend a week...that would be easier to get to by train (or bus, or private driver) from Spello that is in between Spello and Bologna? (Other than Florence)

You have to change trains from Spello to Bologna and one of the connections is in Cortona. A lot of people like Cortona.

It looks like about four hours to get from Spello to Urbino by bus: Spello to Gubbio via Assisi and then Gubbio to Urbino. To me, that wouldn't be too long as I adore Urbino. I have not done the Assisi to Gubbio leg but have done Gubbio to Urbino. Otherwise, you might look at Arezzo. Or Ravenna, if you haven't been there. Or split your time between the two.

We spent a week in Cortona. It has a lot to offer. Near Lake Trasimino.

Along the train lines from Spello to Bologna, Arezzo is almost the dividing time - two hours for each half. I stayed in Arezzo for their jousting festival, and it’s a nice town. I stayed up the hill in the old section of the city.
While you’re in Spello, do you have time to take the 30-minute train to Perugia? There’s wonderful activities I enjoyed there! They’re explained towards the end of my trip report last June:

Perhaps a stay along the coast? Rimini would make a nice base and weather should be pleasurable.
