We have a Best of South Italy in 13 days tour scheduled for Sep-Oct that ends in Naples. Any suggestions for after the tour for 7-8 nights? We are thinking of taking a train back to Rome and then on to Orvieto or Cinque Terra or is going Sicily a better option?
Depends on what you are interested in -looking for. The South Italy tour is quite intense, longer drives than normal on Rick's tours and then ending in Naples - which is an amazing city and which I loved (much to my surprise). I did it in September some years ago and it was hot, hot, hot so maybe head to Orvieto and Cinque Terre - cooler and quieter. Sicily I also loved but I think after southern Italy you might want greener climes. Whichever you chose you will have a great time.
I would save Sicily for another time, as well. Have you been to Italy before?
Rome, Orvieto and Cinque Terre sounds good. If you want to go further, either Tuscany or Umbria could be a good week's stay for something different.
Do you plan to rent a car or use public transportation?
Sorry, I should have been more specific. No car, we plan to use public transportation. We were in Italy 6 years ago and will spend 2-4 days in Rome before the tour starts there.
You haven't mentioned what city you're planning your departure from. Rome? If so, then my vote is for Sicily. From Naples you can get to Palermo or Catania pretty inexpensively, even less expensively than several train rides on the mainland. With another 7 nights you can do the East side of Taormina and see Mt. Etna, Taormina (the beautiful Greek Theatre) and the ruins down in Syracuse. This is a great trip you're taking, and you're allowing yourselves three whole weeks to really get to know Italy, so congratulations on that. If you want more info on Sicily, let me know via PM. Sicily is really beautiful, and the people are wonderful.
