After RS tour Rome Christmas where else?

Looking at RS tour during Christmas week in Rome. After trip ends on the 26th would like to see another area. We know weather will be iffy. Family of four. Saw Florence (briefly) and Venice on BOE 14 few years ago. Where would you suggest?

If you haven’t finished with Florence and Venice, each can be great in winter. In fat, winter is my favorite time in Venice. Even though there will be Christmas travelers it will be far less crowded than in summer when there are the bloody cruise ships. And the lights are lovely at Christmas.

Florence is also delightful because regardless of weather there are the museums.

Sorrento is popular with Italians after Christmas and winter is a great time to go to Pompeii. No crowds nor suffocating heat.

Take the ferry over to croatia and visit Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina. You won't regret it. It is the most peaceful joyfull place on earth.

Thank you for the replies. Was thinking to see something new. Was suggested Salerno. Naples? Thanks for the suggestions.

I think Sorrento is far more charming than either Naples or Salerno. From Sorrento you can easily day trip to Naples as well as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Positano, Amalfi town, Capri and more.

Though Laurel has given some great suggestions, I think you should stay in Naples if you head south. A few years ago I stayed in Positano the week before Christmas and found that many places and most restaurants were closed for the season. You might find the same in Sorrento at that time of year.

We were in Florence last year in December and although we had been there many times before, it was so nice it December. Yes it was cold, but we really felt like we were locals. Not a lot of tourists and really low crowd factor. We loved it!

Where are you flying home from?

Outside my town Salerno, Florence is my favorite tourist city in Italy. If you haven't seen much of it, I would definitely do that, as Florence is a bit more "winter friendly" I think.

The coastal cities will be very calm at that time (I have never gone over there in the wintertime) and you definitely won't be able to enjoy all that they have to offer. I think if you do go south, Naples or Salerno are best, as they are "normal" towns that aren't restricted by tourist times/weather. Naples is good if you are wanting to do the museums or anything on the circumvesuviana, but if you want less of a bustling "normal" town, I would say Salerno.

We did spend a week in Sorrento one December and it was terrific! Cool but sunny (rain part of one day out of 7) and Pompeii was empty. Some hotels and restaurants were closed, but there were plenty open and according to our hotel (Antiche Mura) they were expecting to be fully booked beginning Dec 26 so it would not be too quiet.

Thank you! My husband and I spent three days in Florence on the RS Venice,Florence, and Rome tour. Then our family spent a day there on the BOE tour a few years ago. We liked Florence & think that would be a good option but Solerno does sound really interesting. Naples as a city sounds good too. So many options.

Yeah happy to see RS added a Rome trip the week after Christmas. So now it's real. Sorrento is sounding very interesting for a few days before the tour. Any suggestions on hotels etc for a family of 4? Anyone use Mondo shared tours? Not sure if spelling that right the tour company Rick discusses for small tours in the area for day tours? Hoping they will have a tour in the off season? Thank you for your help

At that time of year, off season, Mondo does not offer any shared tours. I spent some time in Naples last December and really enjoyed it. There’s a lot to see in the city, easy day trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum and of course pizza! It’s also easy to take the train to Paestum to visit the Greek temples there.

Sorrento is gorgeous and also easy from which to do day trips. It is a lot more tourist centric than Naples so a lot of the hotels and restaurants might be closed for season or the holidays. A few years ago I stayed in Positano a few days before the Christmas Rome tour and it was dead. Pretty but disappointing.
