Affordable Tuscan Agriturismo

Rick Steves Italy book lists agriturismos in the heart of Tuscany but I have found each of them to be unaffordable for us. We would really like to stay in the countryside in the heart of Tuscany. Has anyone found more affordable lodging? I would like to spend no more than $100 per night.

If you rent a car in Tuscany, more options open up for you. We stayed in Podere Pogetto and liked it a lot! Great location between Florence and Sienna. They have a brand new website where I can't find the prices anymore but it should be within your price range, especially if you book during the shoulder season.

I presume you are renting a car, because if you don't, you shouldn't be considering staying in an Agriturismo. This type of accommodations are farmhouses, which after the industrialization of Italy post WW2 were abandoned and starting in the 1970's reconverted into rustic, yet often poshy, tourists' lodgings. As such nearly all of them are located in the middle of the countryside, often far from towns, without adequate public transportation options.

Once you understand that you will need a car, the Agriturismo options are really infinite. There are over 21000 in all of Italy and over 4000 in Tuscany alone! Virtually in any price range. You don't have to follow Rick Steves' list, or even the recommendations of people here. You can do your own search in the websites below, or many others.
One thing to consider however, is that some of them are really isolated and difficult to reach, even with a car. Therefore you need to see where they are exactly on Google Maps, and test, using a Google Maps, how long it would take to drive from where they are, to the places you intend to visit from that location.
