My wife and I are traveling to Cinque Terre for 3 days next June and are looking for a place to stay with a view that is also affordable. Per Rick Steves book we are thinking Vernazza is an ideal location (correct me if there are better options). Rick's books also suggests Trattoria Gianni as an affordable place to stay but I see if you want a view the price seems to be relatively high. Does anyone have any suggestions of places in Vernazza that have a great balcony where my wife and I can watch the sunset and drink wine at night. Thanks!
If I may be so bold, may I suggest you open up the wallet and treat your wife to that room with a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. Maybe she'll buy the wine.
We just returned from staying four nights in the CT and visited all five towns. We stayed in Monterosso at the Hotel Marina. It has no view except if you go up on their fourth floor terrace where you can see the sea (standing up). The rates were reasonable and the rooms were clean and what I would call "typical" for a Rick Steves recommended hotel. However, they had the best free breakfast of any place we have stayed in Europe. They made any type of eggs you wanted including omlettes, home made waffles, fruit, rolls etc. Then from 3 to 5 PM they have a spread where they will prepared a different type of past each day and have fruit, etc. Some people we met made that their evening meal some nights to save a little. We were glad we stayed in Monterosso because there us quite a bit more going on there then there is any of the other towns. My wife especially enjoyed walking along the water front in the evenings which you can't do in the other villages.
I was a Vernazza fan prior to traveling to the CT the first time. It's a charming village, but we now like staying in Manarola better. You might have a look at this site where we found an apartment with a view in Manarola for our upcoming trip. You can always pop over to Vernazza or any other village for dinner. Don't miss Il Pirata for dinner in Vernazza!
