Affordable lodging in Sorrento

I am looking into 2 very affordable inns in Sorrento for a solo, 4-night stay in mid-May 2014, and wonder if any of you have personal experience with either. Both seem to have high customer ratings through TA, Booking.com, etc.

One is Hotel Il Nido, which is outside of town, with a free shuttle into town, about a 10-minute ride. Single rate of 70 to 80 euros. I can't tell if being outside of town would be a refuge from tourism or a constant hassle of getting where I want to be, including getting to transportation to other visits, and getting back to the inn, or stopping by when I might want to.

The other is Belvedere Sorrento B & B right on the main square Piazza Tasso. Single rate is 76 euros, just about the same. Not knowing Sorrento, I don't know if being right on the busy main square would be pleasant and very convenient, or just too busy and touristy to enjoy.

Any thoughts, wise people?

Larry,

The reviews I've seen for Il Nido have been very positive, so that's one place I would definitely consider on my next visit to Sorrento. It looks like a beautiful hotel and I'm sure the views are awesome. Even though it's outside of town, apparently the Shuttle Bus runs frequently so getting back and forth doesn't look like it would be a problem. I'm not familiar with Belevedere Sorrento B&B so can't offer any comments.

Another hotel you could look at is Hotel Desiree, which is on the far end of town next to La Tonnarella (I believe the two hotels share a beach). The walk from there to the main part of town is quite pleasant and not difficult at all.

Happy travels!

Have you looked at the Ulisse Deluxe Hostel? First ignore "hostel" in the title, this is an hotel. There are a couple of dorm rooms but this is because of the planning regs at the time when it was easier to get permission to build a hostel rather than a hotel! They are showing single use of double rooms for 73 euro per night in May. Although not right in the centre of town it is easily walkable from there. Ask at the hotel for the short cuts. Also, should you so wish you have the opportunity to mix, other than at meal times, with other guests in the public areas which is not the case in all/smaller places. Well reviewed on Tripadvisor.

Thanks for these suggestions Ken and Linda, which I have followed up with web research. And Linda, all I can say is "wow!" Is Ulisse really as good as it looks, at such a reasonable price? How do you say "wow" in Italian? All I can remember from my student days is "porca miseria!". Help me out here, Roberto,

I think the fact that it has no views affects the price. Also that it is tucked away but once you know the short cuts through the old town streets, it is no distance to Piazza Tasso etc. It is on the road to Sorrento's fishing harbour, Marina Grande, which has some good restos and a couple of small bars to while an evening away.

PS - from time to time we stay at a place on Piazza Tasso and providing there is good double glazing and air conditioning (because you have to have the windows shut at night) it is great place to be. Bar del Carmine in front of the church in the Piazza does great cocktails!

Just an update, Linda and Ken. Thanks for your suggestions for Sorrento. I looked into and contacted all of the possible inns you mentioned, and a few others. Some were ALREADY full in May, or at least had no rooms available for single use. Some others were very expensive, OK for a special weekend maybe, but not as part of a month of hotel bills. In the end, I will be very pleased to call Il Nido Sorrento my home away from home for four nights in May, at 70 euros a night. It has a lovely location and view, a ways out of town, but has superb reviews and everyone says their regular shuttle into town makes the location very accessible. After several days in Palermo and Naples, I figure that "a ways out of town" will be appreciated! Ciao for now, and grazie again, Larry

Larry,

It's good to hear that you now have that sorted. Post a Trip Report when you get back, as others may be interested in your experience with Il Nido. If you need info on a good restaurant and budget is not a concern, post another note.

Enjoy your time in Sorrento!

Larry, I think you will be very happy with Il Nido! We've always stayed in town but know many people who have stayed at Il Nido and rave about it. One friend went back just to stay there again. The views will be amazing. Enjoy!

FWIW, Larry, I stayed at Il Nido 2 years ago (2nd choice was Ulisse, but was traveling with in-laws and thought Il Nido would be better for them and their particular circumstances). We Loved It! The breakfasts and dinners were fantastic, and we DIDN'T want to stay in town with the noise. If the Trip Advisor reviews look good to you, you'll like it. Just give them a call when you arrive in town (if by train) and they'll pick you up. We found the shuttle bus to be no problem; it ran as advertised. We took several day trips that required going to and from the train station, and the shuttle took us close enough to walk the rest of the way to the station; no problems. I hope you reserved a bay-view room! We are already planning our second stay with Il Nido...

Jealous much ;-)

Two years ago we stayed at Ulisee Deluxe. It was very clean and quiet and the price was right. It is a little out of the way, but we really liked it. We stayed in a large double room, not the dorm style area. I would definitely recommend it and plan to stay there again on my next trip to Sorrento.

I've enjoyed following this conversation. Il Nido is one of my favorite places to stay in all of Italy. I've written reviews several times (since i've stayed there several times). I'm glad you've chosen it - and I'm glad to see how many others in this conversation have mentioned it. And thanks for reminding me - it's time to make my reservations for next year! btw - I think that dinner at Il Nido is a must! In fact, it now ranks as my favorite restaurant in Sorrento. Try the risotto with pears and gorganzola. Amazing!

Ulisse Deluxe was perfect for us in Oct 2010. We were in our late 60s and late 70s and were able to walk everywhere in Sorrento from hotel. Large rooms and a great breakfast. We would certainly stay there again.

Recently stayed at Ulisse in Nov 2013 for 4 nights. Although the rooms are pretty plain, the breakfast and public spaces are nice. Small bar in hotel lobby for coffee, tea, wine, beer, cake, but not cheap. Short walk to Sorrento's main drag. First left out of hotel after leaving entrance to the right. Less than 10-minutes through a scenic back street to Tasso. Another 5-10 to the rail station and where bus for Amalfi departs and returns. Great little hotel connected to a spa and uphill from the marina. Taxi fare of €8-12 to rail station when desk staff called. Paid €20 from rail station to Ulisse on arrival in Sorrento (in the rain, so kind of worth it)! Book your room with breakfast! Did have problems with first room, with bugs the staff called "Mosquitos". I call them "drain bugs". Promptly moved. On third day, our door knob fell off the front of the room door. Promptly reattached. Accommodating staff. Clean, aside from the bug nuisance. Did I mention the really nice breakfast?

We had a fabulous stay at Villa Monica in Sorrento last May. Fabulous views, great service, charming rooms, excellent host, great shuttle service and pricing comparable to the places you've mentioned.

We stayed at Il Roseto, and found it to be a good value.
