i appreaciate the quick feedback. we would fly out of DC rather than NYC. (have friends there). i would hope they'd bring their A game to DC. i guess i'm most concerned with the confusing airport part and the transit visa. of course the 350 or 400 more per flight does make things less complicated; nonetheless, this is the highest airfare to europe i've seen. we flew from orlando to dublin last year for aboput 800 pp and the year before (2010), - on a trip to france - flew into brussels for 900 pp. and roughly the same (800-10000 in other previous years. so, thanks all. i'm curious to see if there are any positive tales of the moscow airport.

My step-daughter flew from LA to Rome on Aeroflot last year. Check carefully the connection time in Moscow .... I think she had about 11 or 12 hours in the airport in Moscow. The flight was cheap but she was a basket case when finally arriving in Rome.

Two years ago, I flew Aeroflot from JFK to Moscow Sheremyetevo. The flight was fine; it was a new Airbus with audio-video on demand at every seat and a USB charging port at every seat (so you can bring your iPod or tablet and keep it charged during the flight while you use it), the food was fine (probably better than Delta), the flight attendants were reasonable, etc. I knew Aeroflot had a terrible reputation, but my sister had just taken this flight and reassured me it was just as good as Delta, and she was right. A few things to keep in mind: 1. The flight from JFK to Moscow is one of Aeroflot's prime routes, and they have competition with Delta on this route. So, I assume they use their newest planes, their best flight attendants, etc. I assume it is not representative of other routes they fly. 2. A lot of the bad stories about Aeroflot apply to flights within the former Soviet Union, and a lot of them actually date from Soviet times. If you're paying attention to someone's anecdote, check the date and route before accepting it as applicable to your situation.
3. Even with my positive experience, I wouldn't want to change planes in Moscow. It's a confusing airport, and you may need a transit visa (not easy or cheap to get). In my case, I was going to Moscow as my final destination. So, on the one hand, I'm saying don't worry, and on the other hand, I'm saying be very careful - not about the airline itself, but the airport and the possible need for a visa.

Hi Rich. I also noticed that Aeroflot offers some great deals to Italy but I've read varied things about them on the internet. I personally don't think I'd fly them but that's because my brother (a Delta captain) has always told me that if given a choice, stick with a U.S. or well-known western european airline (from a safety standpoint).

Not to mention that Moscow is not on the way to Italy. For a few hundred dollars, you spend much longer on a plane and many hours in the Moscow airport. Is that really worth it to you?
