Aer Lingus airline to Naples

Has anyone flown on Aer Lingus? I can get a one way flight from Omaha, Nebraska to Naples, Italy for around $900 in April. I am going to Italy for the birth of a grandchild, and I don't know when I will want to return to the U.S., so I guess the one way ticket is the only thing to do, since refundable flights seem to be very expensive.

Great for you on being in Italy for the birth of a grandchild. Our grandchildren are in Kansas and we try to see them four times a year from California.

As for your one-way ticket, www.kayak.com shows this as the lowest price fare to get you from Omaha to Naples. It looks like you will fly United Airlines (Aer Lingus partner) to Chicago, change planes and fly Aer Lingus to Dublin, Ireland and change planes again to fly from Dublin to Naples. The overall journey takes 15hrs-22hrs depending on which flights you have.

In theory you could encounter an entry problem since you might be asked to show a ticket to leave Italy. In practice it could be reassuring to check with an Italian consulate or on-line to see the rules.
Is a round-trip fare that allows you to change the return date more expensive in total? You are already looking at lot more for two single fares rather than for a round-trip. $900 times two, that is, or $1,800 total, compared to about $1,300 round-trip. The penalty to alter the return date is unlikely to be as much as that $500 difference. By the way, trans-Atlantic fares usually go up later in May and stay up for the summer, and yes they are promising to be higher than last summer.

Check the cost of a round trip ticket, it may not be much more expensive in April.
Unless you are a EU citizen you can't stay over 3 months as a tourist, so eventually you have to come back to Omaha. A few years ago, when my father was ill and eventually passed I had to extend my stay and the penalty was not a huge amount, certainly no more than $250 (it might have been much less, I don't recall). I think you can extend up to a year.

Although I don't usually book through a travel agent, you may want to check with one to see what an exchangeable ticket would be. I've found that they can sometimes give better deals on those. If that doesn't work, I think it may be cheaper to change your flight (sometimes there is a $300 or so fee in addition to the change in fare) than booking another one way at the last minute (when you know you want to return home). Sometimes one way flights are more expensive than a return one, so I would be cautious in expecting to find another for $900.

For Aer Lingus - I have not flown them but have heard their a fine airline. They're a partner of United.

Last September we flew on Aer Lingus from Rome FCO to Dublin (Airbus A320) and Dublin to Chicago (Airbus A330). The flights and service were excellent. Check their website carefully for size and weight restrictions of carry-on bags (we had no problem with our RS convertible carry-on and rolling carry-on).

We used Are Lingus from Madrid to Venice it was ok, for the short flight. Not sure on what it would be like for suck a long haul. I would check CheapoAir, we just booked round trip open jaw for the summer for about $900 p/p flying with British Airlines...not bad considering how American was charging us about $7000 for all 4 of us....

It often works out cheaper to buy a round-trip ticket and pay a penalty if you need to change the flight. Do you have a general idea of how long you will be there? Can you estimate a return date based on the baby's due date?

If you buy a round-trip ticket and come home on the date you originally selected, then it will likely be cheaper than two one-ways. If you decide to change the date, you need to make the change before your originally scheduled date. You'd pay a penalty fare plus any difference in price.

If you decide to look into this, read carefully all the rules about changes for your fare.

I flew on Aer Lingus from Chicago to Dublin and it was fine. The seats were not any less comfortable than economy seats for American based airlines. There was no movie to watch but that was the days before everyone had Ipads.
