Aeolian Islands In September/October?

Planning an itinerary for Sicily for the fall--arriving in Catania on September 24. I just read an older post that said that the islands aren't worth visiting "before June or after September."

Agree or disagree? Do things there close to tourists after September?

If we go, we plan to take a ferry from Milazzo or Messina.

Thanks for any update!

Au contraire, I visited Lipari in April of this year. The weather was great, restaurants and hotels were open, prices were soft and crowds not an issue. It was wonderful. From the train station in Milazzo it is a €13 taxi ride right to the dock.

When I visited Lipari several years ago, it was at the end of October. An interesting-looking ceramic shop was closed for the season but hotel, restaurant and going-around-island by motor boat were available. On my travel date, high winds kept the ferry from docking at Vulcano, but winds can be a problem in other seasons, too, as I've seen in Sorrento and in Greece.

Does anyone know how far out ferry schedules are published?
Thanks!

Ferry schedules are usually available by season (summer and winter), so you should be able to find timetables now. There are two ferry companies, I think. If you leave from Messina, you can walk from the train station to the dock, as I recall from three years ago (google map to be sure).
