I have just been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration in my 2nd eye. The doctors have recommended I do my traveling sooner rather than later. My husband and I have wanted to see Italy. We've just come across a deal for 3600 for 2 for 7 days at Hotel Gardenia in Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. The deal includes airfare rental car taxes andgratuoties. We like to be on our own to explore with advice from others. We love the sea, but enjoy also being in the middle of a town center where we can leisurely eat and take in the scene and hopefully get to know the people a little bit. If there is a more pastoral area or a way to walk beaches or climb rocky paths we'd love that. It's hard to know whether we belong in Tuscany or A alfisols. Since our trip has been pushed up this deal fit our budget, but we'd love your advice and suggestions.

On the map, it looks to me a bit far from the center of town. I can't tell if it's a steep walk or not. What are the dates? I was in Sorrento in low season and loved it. Driving in Sorrento can be tricky, the center is off-limits and there's a one-way system around it.

If we get this it will be in Oct or Nov. How convenient is Sorrento to other small coastal towns as well as to Rome. We like to settle into a own, experience it and then explore a bit.
The hotel is about a 15 - 20 minute flat walk from the town centre. The most direct route takes you along a busy road with sometimes narrow sidewalks. There is a bus that goes along the road at about 20 minute intervals. I agree that a car will often be more of a hindrance than help. Parking in Sorrento, and other town centres in the area, is difficult and getting more so as the local authorities are tring to discourage cars. There is a multi-story car park about 5 minutes walk from Sorrento railway station which charges, last time I looked, 2 euro an hour. Also check out the hotel parking charges. Have you looked at the hotel website? It has a map and a Google "Streetview" link so you will be able see for yourself its location etc. http://www.hotelgardenia.com/en/index.php
