Hi all! I will be making my third trip to Italy this July and you have all helped in the past. I am trying to decide what the best mode of transportation would be. I will be going into Rome on July 8, and staying 5 nights, leaving on the 13th for Orvieto for one night and then to Assisi for two nights, then on to Florence for 6 nights and onto Volterra for 5 nights for the Bocelli concert. I will return to Florence to fly back to the US on July 29. My question, what would be the best way/mode to travel from Rome to Oriveto, bus or train? And would you get train tickets form Rome to Assisi, and stop in Orvieto or is this not possible. I have been to Assisi, and know that the train from there to Florence is good, and also taken the bus from Florence to Volterra, so I know what to do there. Just not sure about the trip from Rome to Assisi with a stop in Orvieto for one night. Thanks you guys for being here, and all of the help you are able to give friends!
Definitely by train. A first class ticket from the Termini Station in Rome to Orvieto on Rail Europe website is 48.00USD; second class is 10.00 less. The ride is slightly over an hour. It's very easy to get around in Orvieto when you get off of the train--buses and taxis can take you anywhere you want to go that is not within walking distance. Even our hotel concierge did not advise us to drive out of Rome to Orvieto, so we chose the train as our best option.
You'll save money if you buy your train tickets when you get to Italy rather than buying them from Rail Europe. For example, the fare for InterCity trains from Rome to Orvieto is €13.50 for 2nd class and €18.50 for 1st class. For Regionale trains the fare is €7.10 for 2nd class and €11.00 for 1st class.
Direct trains from Rome to Assisi do not go through Orvieto. You will have to buy separate tickets for Rome-Orvieto and Orvieto-Assisi.
Bus schedules can be hard to work out in advance if you don't speak Italian since many of the inter-city bus companies are targeting natives and not foreigners and their websites are in Italian only. So the train might be a better option if you want to know the times & cost in advance. However if you stop in to the TI they could help you with bus schedules once you're there.
