Advice on my Venice itinerary!

Hi,

I will be spending the first few days of my Italy trip in early October in Venice with my fiancé. We are both 25 in case anyone was wondering, so we don't mind a faster-paced itinerary.

Can anyone offer advice on the itinerary below? Based on the activities I mentioned, what would be the best grouping based on location? As my itinerary is now, it seems like I'm all over the place and I'm not sure how long it actually takes to get from neighborhood to neighborhood (or how to get from place to place.)

Any tips on the best time of day to do certain things (St. Marks basilica I heard is best in the morning for example)? I probably won't do all of the things mentioned, and will want time to relax, etc. but I just like to have a plan in case so I know what my options are.

Also, the train station into and out of Venice is Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia, not Venezia Mestre right?

Thanks in advance!

Riding the vaporetto from one end to the other is a great way to enjoy Venice. Some of the boats have seats in the very front (the best spot). Second best is at the open rear.Rick has a good audio tour to listen to while you're cruising along the Canal. Do it at least once during the day and once after dark. Get up before dawn and ride it at least part of the way, then watch sunrise over the lagoon from San Marco.

Venice can be more than a little confusing to walk, but if you don't get lost, it's often faster than riding the vaporetto, which snakes through the city. Get a good map. A compass can be very useful too.

Reserve the Secret Itineraries tour in advance. It gets hot up there under the roof, so the earlier time is best. Take water and a fan, just in case. You can visit other parts of the Doge's Palace before the tour begins, as well as afterward.

The best time to visit the basilica is between 11.30-12.30 when the mosaics are floodlit. Go up to the museum for closer looks at them and the view from the balcony.

The train station is Santa Lucia. You will be riding the length of the Grand Canal from there to the San Marco area. Be sure to buy a vaporetto pass when you arrive. There is a little stand outside the train station and you can buy a 72 hour pass.

You might want to visit Piazza San Marco before you go to Rialto market. It is amazing very early in the morning with no one there. I tend to avoid that area except for very early or after dark due to the crowds.
Cannaregio is quite close to the train station, so you can plan 45 minutes (approximately) each time you travel from San Marco to Cannaregio. But riding up and down the Grand Canal is one of my favorite things to do while in Venice.
Your itinerary looks pretty good for two young, energetic people. If you visit Ca Rezzonica your last morning, there are many good restaurants close by in Dorsoduro. There is also a Grom gelato in Campo San Barnaba - a lovely small campo very close to the Palazzo.

Superb planning, wow. You didn't give yourself any time to visit Giudecca for views back across the bacino to San Marco or to San Giorgio to take the lift up the campinile for great views of Venice, Giudecca, and the Lido, basically all the surrounding area. You might think about that.

I like the upstairs of San Marco when the sun plays on the gold mosaics. You get a lot of varying color and it is quite spectacular to see the sun move across the tiles.

  1. Yes, Venezia Santa Lucia is the right station. Buy two 72 hour vaporetto passes. Take the No 1 from there to Sant'Angelo, walk in from there to your hotel. A good map will help.
  2. If you want a prime seat for the vaporetto and are not in a huge hurry, take the No 1 in the other direction to Piazzale Roma, which is the terminus. Everyone will get off, then the boat will be empty and you can reboard going the other direction and you will have the choice of seats. I don't think boats with front seats are used anymore on the No 1 boats, but check and see.
  3. For a great view of the city, go up the campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore on the small island across from Piazza San Marco. No line, costs less, is almost as high as the campanile of San Marco.
  4. If you get homesick for a real north European/American style pub, check out the Devils Forest Pub in the Rialto district, off Campo San Bartolomeo on Calle Stagnieri behind the Disney Store.
  5. Board the vaporetto to the train station when you leave before the 72 hour pass expires (should be about 3:30 pm), otherwise you will have to cough up another 7 euro per person.

You have a good plan. Stay flexible and be prepared to change the plan according to what comes up.
