Flying into Venice on the 30th and out of Rome on the 10th. It's my wife's first visit to Italy and my second (haven't been since I was 14 years old,we are in our 40's now. My wife is an artist and we wanted to be in Venice for La Biennale but we cut our time there short in order to go to Verona on the 1st, should we go back to Venice for another night and then go to Florence and cut a day from Florence? We were married October 2011 and so this is our delayed Honeymoon. Any and all suggested sites to visit or things to do would be greatly appreciated. Although we don't plan on killing ourselves and just kind of taking it easy. We have the attitude that we will be back again. We will be visiting: Thu 5/30 Arrive Venice Airport 12:30pm Fri 5/31 Venice Sat 6/1 Venice/Verona (Bocelli/Carreras/Domingo Concert at Verona Arena) Sun 6/2 Verona/Florence Mon 6/3 Florence Tue 6/4 Florence Wed 6/5 Florence/Rome Thu 6/6 Rome Fri 6/7 Rome Sat 6/8 Rome Sun 6/9 Rome Mon 6/10 fly back to the States early in the morning. Hotels: Venice - Residenza Al Doge Beato
Verona - B&B Vicola 22 Florence - La Dimora Del Centro Rome - Hotel Re Di Roma Has anyone stayed at any of these B&B's or Hotels? Andrew
You will find it pretty nigh impossible to get back to Venice after the 3 tenors concert. Trains stop running into Venice after 10:29 pm. You would have to cut out after 1 hour (I believe it starts at 9 pm). So you might as well stay in Verona over night.
We have a hotel in Verona for after the concert. I meant should we go back on Sunday for one more day of Venice and cut a day out of Florence?
Looks like there is a train strike scheduled for June 2. See Transportation forum. My Italian is close to 0, but it looks like no regional service from 9 am to 5 pm. Trenitalia looks like 9 pm on June 1 to 9 pm to June 2 9 pm.
Stay in Verona 2 nights. There is a train strike on June 2, as mentioned above, although it might be recalled (unlikely). Get to Verona late in the afternoon on June 1 (just on time to see the tenors), then the next day visit the city. Or if you want, you could take a quick bus trip to somewhere on Lake Garda (Sirmione?). Monday morn, go to Florence.
What about renting a car in venice on Saturday and driving to Verona and then to Florence perhaps returning it on Monday the 3rd after going to Pisa for the day?
Be aware of the dreaded ZTL. Big fines if you drive into the centers of Verona, Florence or Pisa. And you don't find out about them until 6 months after you get home. Thats just the rental car company's service charge for diming on you. Then the bills for the actual fines show up in your mailbox with the threat of collection agencies. New Italian tourist tax. Very lucrative.
Andrew, I would advise against renting a car. The public transportation connections are so good between everywhere you want to go. This is your honeymoon, a time for relaxing and having fun. IMHO, driving in Italy is NOT relaxing and for this itinerary really not necessary.
Oh yes. We are looking forward to relaxing and enjoying every minute of our time. I only ask about the car rental because of what Sam was saying about a train strike and If that is the case I would love to take my wife to see a balsamic vinegar vineyard or wine vineyard on our way down to Florence if we can't take a train from Verona to Florence. How flexible are B&B's with reservations when there is a train strike?
I just happened to luck into that. I am so excited about our trip (we were married October 2011 and were supposed to take the trip April 2012 but unfortunately we had to postpone the trip). I look at things to do and where to go every single day. I had the idea of looking at what concerts or festivals were going on while we are there and happen to see that the Opera Season in Verona starts just after we return but there is a special concert on the 1st. Now my wife is an artist so we were already excited that we would be in Venice for La Biennale when it starts but this is the chance of a lifetime to see these Three Tenors in that arena. So I looked and couldn't believe they still had seats available. So I found a B&B to stay at for the night...booked it and then bought the tickets. My wife and I saw Bocelli on Valentine's Day in 2011 in South Florida a week after I had proposed to her. But going to this concert sacrifices a day or two in Venice so there is a bit of sacrifice. ;-)
Venice is my 3rd-favorite city in the world, but there's lots more to Verona than just the opera. Google Verona Card. If the strike is cancelled you could opt to day-trip to Venice. June 1 - be sure to leave enough time to get to the train station in Venice (water transport is either slow or expensive) and then to check into your Verona hotel before the opera (wow - great luck).
