Advice on getting around Rome on Easter Sunday

I'm going to Rome on 4/11 - 4/16. I will be traveling by myself. I realized that 4/12 is Easter Sunday after I booked my flights, so I couldn't change it. I've decided to just work through it and make the best out of these 5 days. Luckily I was still able to book a hotel not far from the Coliseum at a decent rate. I guess that's a good start. ^_^
I'm currently trying to consolidate my itinerary. I understand that most places in Rome, including stores and restaurants, will probably closed on both Easter Sunday and Monday.

As a non-religious person, are there places I can go to on these two days?

I'm arriving in Rome on Saturday, 4/11 late morning. I'm planning to just walk around exploring the city. Sunday and Monday are still up in the air. I will visit the Vatican on Tuesday, and depending on what I can do on Sun and Mon, I'll probably explore Villa Borghese or the Forum and Palatine Hill on Wednesday. I'm leaving Thursday morning.

Any advise would be helpful. I just want to make sure I have a plan, since I'll be just by myself. Thanks everyone.

Dee, while most shops will be closed on Easter, I believe that you will find that restaurants are open.

Hi, Our worst trip ever to Rome was over Easter weekend several years ago, sorry to say. It's just that the crowds are so big and everything is mobbed, especially roads and trains; I think all the Italians as well as all the tourists are on the road somewhere! But you're going to be there so I'm sure you'll make the best of it. And at least you'll know this ahead of time, we didn't! You need reservations anytime to get into the Borghese, so hurry and get them if you can. St Peters will be packed, but maybe all the dividers they set up inside will be taken down after Sunday. You can visit all the free things that are always open, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, Pantheon, the outside of the Coliseum and Roman Forum. Good luck and have a great trip....it's Italy...how bad could it be?! : )

Thanks! That is very helpful.

I managed to get a reservation at Borghese on Sunday, whew! I'm planning to go to the free outdoor sites on Monday.

I know the trains and buses will probably be packed over that weekend, so I'm prepared to do a lot of walking.

I think this will eventually work out. I'm really excited. :-)
