I need advice about taking a day trip to Milan. I am staying in Florence and my mother want to see the Da Vinci Last Supper. Is it worth it to go to Milan for the day from Florence just to see the Last Supper? Is it hard to go to Milan from Florence?
It will consume your entire day. You can find information about reserving for the Last Supper on this website.
First of all, you need to check reservation availabilty for the time you are planning to go; they require reservations and they book up early. There's info on Rick's site under Best Destinations/Milan, Northern Italy. I don't remember exactly how long it takes by train between Milan and Florence, but it's not that long and you pass through pretty countryside so the time passes quickly. As for whether or not it's worth the day to see the Last Supper, I know some who were disappointed by it, but I thought it had a delicate yet powerful beauty. Plus there are other things to see in a day-trip to Milan. The cathedral is a bit over-the-top but very impressive, the museum at La Scala is fun even if you're not that into opera, and there's a beautiful glassed-in arcade (shoot!I forget the name) between the cathedral and La Scala. I also like Sforza Castle which is just down the pedestrianized street from the cathdral square. It's not exactly a fairytale castle, but it has a nice relaxed park on the grounds which is great for people watching and picnicing.
Thanks for your advice.
