advice on choice of location

We're planning a first trip to Italy with two options: flying in and out of Zurich, taking a day train to Milan one way before we venture on 2 hiking trips in Italy; or, in and out of Florence taking a few days to tour the city. Any comments as to which 3 day "start" might be better with jet lag?

For jet lag being out and about in Florence for couple days would be better than a long train ride to Milan from Zurich. I vote for Florence.

I agree. Fly into Florence, give yourself the chance to recover from jet lag and enjoy the city. Then hike.

We just returned from a family trip to Rome with some of our group starting the trip by flying into Zurich. They found Zurich worth a visit and took an inexpensive flight on Easy Jet to Rome out of Geneva (around 30 dollars).
You could also consider flying open jaw so you do not have to backtrack.

I like the idea of flying into Zurich. The train station is right at the airport and you can rest from your trip and see some beautiful scenery on the way to Milan. You wouldn't necessarily have to spend your first night in Milan - from there you could travel to Verona or Bologna to rest for a couple of days before you begin you hikes. It also depends on which city has the best airfare!

You could fly in and out of Milano. We like Milano and always have. Where do you want to hike? If you are staying in Italy I would not consider going to Zurich, even if it was cheaper. When you travel you either spend time or money, or both. You also could fly into Pisa, Venice, or Florence. Buon viaggio,
