Advice for where to go after flying in to Venice

Hi there, We are doing a cruise out of Venice for our Honeymoon. We arrive in Venice 3 nights before we need to board the ship so I was thinking of either staying in Venice and doing day trips from there (where? Advice please...thinking Verona for 1 day). OR landing and getting on a train to possibly Lake Como or another city? I've been to Italy before but my husband hasn't. I'd love your advice and thoughts. I'm torn because the idea of flying from the states and getting immediately on a train sounds pretty tiring...does anyone know if the train is convenient to the Venice Airport? But I also know that I think 3 day sin Venice is too long...it's magical but not that magical :-) Would love any advice or suggestions please. Thanks!!!

Michele Congratulations on your marriage and honeymoon. Wonderful to spend it in Venice and a cruise. I would go with your idea of staying in Venice and, if you want, go to Verona. As you probably remember, your first day off the plane is a recovery day. You may just want to stay in Venice! But you could take a day trip to Verona, looks like about 1 1/2 hours by train. Would not choose Lake Como, myself. As you said, getting off your flight and onto a train is a little more tiring. Bobbie

Congrats Michele! I would definitely just stay in Venice for 3 days. You can find a cute hotel or B&B away from San Marco and the tourist throng and enjoy the quieter side of the city. 3 days is definitely not too long in Venice IMO, especially considering much of the first day will be wiped out from traveling. You can you go to Murano and Burano for a day or afternoon. You could also take the train to Padua (Padova) for a day if you run out of things to see in Venice.

If Venice was made up only of St. Mark's and the Rialto, then yeah, 3 nights would be too long. But there's so much more to Venice than that. For me, Venice is worth three nights at a minimum! I suggest you buy the RS Venice 2011 book and read it. It has info on unexpected places in Venice, as well as excellent day trips. Also, buy the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Venice for some really wonderful walking tours. Check out the Dorsoduro neighborhood for a peek at the real Venice. Go to the big public gardens past the Arsenale for lots of grass and trees (and virtually no other tourists). And, IMHO, Venice may be the best place to recover from jet lag because it's all about walking in the fresh air and sleeping in the quiet nights.

Why would you go anywhere else other than Venice when you only have 3 nights? After all, you're ALREADY in one the of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world. Stay in Venice.
