Hello,
We will be driving from Florence to Montalcino in a couple of weeks and then on to our daughter's wedding near Poggibonsi. We are looking input on best routes to drive point to point. We would love to avoid the tollways, if possible.
Also, for anyone that has been to Montalcino, is there a restricted zone we should look for?
Thanks so much for your input.
Sue
When you google a town name and "ZTL," you will often get a site with a map. I see this one, but rather than laborious cross-referencing, I would just learn what the sign looks like, as you'll need to know anywhere you go.

Google Maps will tell you which routes have tolls (click on "options" to get non toll routes).
If you pick up at the FLR airport, there is a short portion on the toll freeway A1 to take.
Then you exit the A1 at FIRENZE IMPRUNETA exit and take the RACCORDO FIRENZE SIENA (a no toll freeway) to Montalcino (which is past Siena).
You could get to the RACCORDO without taking the A1 (toll freeway), but why would you want to take the congested surface streets of Florence to go there?
All towns have restricted areas in the historical centers, so park outside and walk.
