Advice about area around Piazza Vittorio Emanuele

Hi everyone,

I am going to be in Rome for about 10 days with two friends of mine in July. We found an apartment for rent in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. I am not very familiar at all with Rome, and was wondering if this is a safe area? Thanks!

Also, my parents will be coming for 10 days after my friends leave, and we will be spending some time in Tuscany. I also would like to go to the Amalfi coast (or Cinque Terra) with them. Any suggestions on which place to go / places to stay, etc. would be most welcome!

Thanks,

nicole

This is the info I have about the location of the apartment:
The apartment is located in Piazza Vittorio

Emanuele II, 2 minutes walking from Santa Maria
Maggiore's Cathedral and via Cavour and very close to Saint
John's Cathedral.

Nicole, that is a great location...you are close to the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and of course the Forum....there are great neighborhood restaurants off the main roads, and you are close to the Metro. As for the next 10 days in July, you are starting late for reservations in the CT, the Amalfi or even Tuscany...I would suggest that you determine what you want to do, and immediately begin with confirming reservations...with four of you traveling, it will be challenging. Tuscany is a better candidate because there are some many small towns that you can use as a base, the opportunities to connect with either a hotel or B&B are greater...you should also look into VRBO for rental units in some of the smaller Tuscan or Umbrian towns.

I think Bill would agree, not only is the area around Santa Maria Maggiore cathedral a nice area, it's also safe.

Thanks so much for your replies! I am now even that much more excited about our time in Rome. Thanks for the info about the trip with my parents too. We have all of our arrangements for Tuscany made & have the option to stay in that region the whole time, but the more I've been reading about Italy, the more I was hoping for some time at the sea. Thanks for your advice about acting fast. If nothing else, we can stay in Tuscany the whole time, which is definitely not a bad option!

Thank you and have a great summer!

I lived briefly right off of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. It is kind of an "ethnic" part of town, lots of Chinese restaurants and stores, along with other Roman residents from around the world. The nice thign about the piazza is that in the summer they show movies in the park in the center of the piazza, and yes it is close to the churches and some really good restaurants. It is a little bit of a hike from the center, center of Rome but it is a "real" neighborhood and it is about a 20-30 minute walk from there to Piazza Venezia. It is very well connected to the subway, which has it its stop right there, and the tram lines run just down the road. The traffic gets a bit loud during the day, but I never got tired of watching it all from my window, and there was also a roof top terrace that was nice.
Have a great stay!

Yes you are close to a metro and good bus connections...halfway between St Maggiore and St John...Great neighborhood..in May 2008 we rented apts (had to do 2, because 1st choice wasn't available until the end of the week)...both short walks to Piazza VE. I never feel comfortable to verify the safety of an area, but it was quite fine for us...a mix...On one corner they sell 5 euro shoes, next corner the 50 euro cake...I'd be really happy to go back there tomorrow .

Yes, that's a pretty safe part of the city. My Uncle's apartment which I stayed in was on Via Emanuele Filiberto which is right in that area. We walked around there at night many times without even the slightest problem. If memory serves, there's a pretty large market nearby if you plan on doing any food shopping. ( I think it's at the intersection of Via Principe Amedeo and Via La Marmora. Forgive me it's been a few years....lol.)) Enjoy your trip!
