Going from Cortona, Tuscany to Florence, Sienna, Assisi, and Orvieto on different days from May 28-June 7. Do we need to purchase tickets in advance?

Trenitalia's Regionale trains can't sell out and offer no discounted tickets for early birds.

High speed and long distance trains rarely sell out, so you don't need to purchase in advance. You can save money doing it both on www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en and www.italotreno.it/en. Read the terms and conditions of discounted fares, the cheapest tickets can't be changed and refunded.

On trenitalia.com you must use the correct station names in Italian: Firenze SM Novella or Firenze Campo di Marte, Siena, Camucia-Cortona.

On high speed routes if you can commit to a specific date/time you can save considerable money.

On some holidays you may find heavy train travel. Otherwise trains don’t usually sell out.

Totally up to you.

The majority of departures on these routes will be unreserved Regional trains. You may find a few reserved InterCity trains in the mix, but not necessarily faster. Distances are short, so ticket prices are pretty cheap for either type.
