Adriatic Italy, Brandisi to Ancona...10 days

I am wondering if it is possible to experience Italy's Adriatic coast travelling by train and getting off for a couple of days in areas of interest. I envision being stranded in some remote train station. I also think much time would be spent getting from each station to the points of interest. I would like to rent a car but my companion says it would be too expensive. Does anyone have thoughts or experience on the subject that they can share ?

When planning a trip, I often google "train map Italy" to get a sense of the main train routes. Brindisi to Ancona should be no problem, but I wonder how easily you will be able to get from the stops to the more quaint towns you may be wishing to spend your time in between trains. To suss that out, the next step would probably be to consult guide books to see what minor train routes and bus lines are like. With 30 days, I'd go for it, but with 10 I would prefer to be much more targeted with my time. Car rental one-way drop-off fees are usually not too onerous within one country--have you checked with a couple agencies?

You can stop in Bari and go inland to Matera for a couple of nights, then back to Bari to continue north by train. Other stops could include Trani, Barletta, then inland again to change trains in Foggia to go further along the coast to Ancona. Another good inland stop, from San Benedetto del Tronto, is Ascoli Piceno, then continue north to Ancona. It depends on how many one-nighters or which stops you want to make in the amount of time you have.
