We will be in Italy for 6 weeks. 15th of September to October 28th. The first 4 weeks are booked in Umbria, Tuscany, Abruzzo and Marche. Having trouble finding accomodations in Puglia Molise and Basilicata provinces. Also can anyone advise us as to some great restaurants and sights not to miss
Thanks
Matera in Basilicata is a unique place. I always stay at B&B Donna Eleonora, just a few steps from the Main Street and a short distance from the Sassi. Restaurant:Il Cantuccio, a few blocks from the B&B. I also like the area near Alberobello. I know a great place to stay out in the countryside but you'll need a car. Also, if you can get to Castel del Monte, it's a very interesting site and a restaurant nearby (again, you would need a car) is Madre Terra. In northern Puglia, around Vieste, you should be able to find lots of hotels.
This will be a lovely time for Italy, and very quiet and beautiful in the areas you have chosen. In Matera (Basilicata) we spent two nights at Locanda di San Martino, in the sassi area. Beautiful cave hotel with an underground thermal spa. Highly recommended. We then had five nights at Masseria Montenapoleone (maybe two hours away in Puglia, near Fasano). Again, highly recommended. It makes a good base, as all of the sights of the Val d'Itria (Alberobello, Noci, Locorotondo, Ostuni) are just a short drive from the hotel. And maybe five minutes in the other direction is Torre Canne, along the sea, with some lovely restaurants. Masseria Montenapoleone has a guest kitchen, stocked with olive oil, herbs, and fresh produce from their gardens. If you're so inclined, you can purchase some groceries and wine on your outings and prepare them at the masseria. We were there mid-October last year, and the hotel was not full, so we were offered a free upgrade. If you're tempted to book a junior suite or a suite, you might want to book a regular room and hope for an upgrade. And finally, I believe booking on their website required a deposit, which I don't like to do, so I booked through booking.com. If you then want to go a little further south, you might spend a couple of nights in Gallipoli. This is a gorgeous little fishing port on the Salento peninsula; it would make a good base for driving around the peninsula. You could make a day trip to Lecce, to see all the baroque churches.
