Adding Lido to Murano/Burano/Torcello day trip

Hi All

I'm on a time crunch (yet again..) and struggling to figure out this itinerary. We have 4 nights in Venice this March, arriving at 10am on a Sunday. On one of our 4 days we are planning to take the vaporetto out to the islands for the day. My Mom has specifically requested that she would really love to put her feet in the Adriatic, and I've read that the place to do this is on the Lido. I was reading Rick's itinerary options and one of them mentions "taking the long way back" to see more of the lagoon, passing Lido but not stopping there.

A few questions:

  1. Is the Lido the best way to get her feet in the Adriatic?
  2. If it is, is the most efficient, logical way to add this to add it to the end of our island day? We will be getting a very early start in the morning - that's no problem.
  3. If this is the best plan, could you explain how I would do this and how long it would take to get back from Burano, go to Lido, walk to the beach and get back to the mainland please?

I did google it, but I find some of the vaporetto information a bit confusing and there isn't much information about adding Lido to the end of this trip. I did think about incorporating it into another day but it seems to not flow very well when I do that.

As always, I truly appreciate your help.

I haven't worked it out quite yet, but I'm sure that it can be done. Off the top of my head I'd go clockwise from Fte Nove around the tail and pick up a boat to Lido, then when done the number 1 will get you back the Grand Canal.

I don't have my copy of Chebateo open at the moment - perhaps somebody else will look up times.

But Murano, Burano, Torcello can really take all day of you let them. Adding in the tail and Lido will add plenty more time so your busy day will be really busy.

I was wondering if Punta Sabbioni would be worth a try, but it is further from the vaporettos and a completely different atmosphere.

The water in the Adriatic will be C-O-L-D so be sure to pack warm ups and an absorbent towel (not a traditional white linen Italian towel).

Good of you to do so much to make your mother happy.

Thank you Nigel!

This is my Mom's dream trip for her 60th and I am so grateful to be able to make it happen for her.

Would it be easier if we went to Burano first and then went to Lido from Murano? Would it be better to skip Torcello?

Alternatively, is there an easier way to incorporate it into another day?

I've only been to the Lido on my way to somewhere else, but it's a quick trip that can easily be done on another day --- it's much closer than the Burano/Murano/Torcello islands.

  1. It’s the closest and fastest way. If that is what you mean by “best”.
  2. No matter what your plans are, you will need to go back to Venice to catch a vaporetto to Lido. There is no direct service from Burano or Torcello, as far as I know. You could potentially do it all in a day, however consider that Europe switches to daylight savings on the morning of the last Sunday of March, therefore it will be kind of dark shortly after 6pm before March 26, 2023. In addition consider that March temperatures are also still rather cold, so your mother’s feet will be very very cold in that water. Nevertheless if that is what you want to do, maybe I would do it on one of the other days you plan to be in Venice. It’s a short vaporetto trip to Lido from Venice, for example from the San Marco area.
  3. From Burano back to Venice is a rather long vaporetto trip. You can’t go from Burano directly to the Lido without going back to Venice first. From Torcello is even longer. Also visiting the Torcello Basilica entails a long walk from the vaporetto stop. Considering the short daylight days in March, I would do the Lido on a day other than the day you plan to visit the lagoon islands.

We went to Lido from Venice accidentally actually as I got us on the wrong vaporetto! It is very close to Venice. We decided to explore and it was probably a 20 minute walk to the public beach. There is sand but it is pretty course. We then ate dinner there and we fortunate enough to catch the sunset going back to Venice which was beautiful.

I too would not suggest going to Lido on the same day as the other islands. BTW, we loved the glass museum in Murano.

I trust that you will be using vaporetto passes. Individual tickets now cost 9.50 euros each, so that will be 19 euros per person for the trip out to the Lido and 38 euros per person to travel Venice-Murano-Burano-Torcello-Venice. A 72-hour pass costs 45 euros. There is no 96-hour pass, unfortunately. The 168-hour (one week) pass costs 65 euros

Acraven,

Thank you for the reminder! Yes we will definitely be purchasing a vaporetto pass. Depending on our plans we may go ahead and purchase the 168 hour pass just to have maximum flexibility. Mom's legs wear out quicker than mine of course so if a few more vaporetto trips on our final day will help her maximize her enjoyment it will be well worth it.

For the benefit of [edit >> your <<] mother, I'll pass along a request I got from my travel mate last September: "Please plot the walking route with the fewest bridges."

Acraven- duly noted!

Nigel - I haven't fully decided yet, but I'm leaning towards doing it on a different day. Even though time's ticking away rather quickly I seem to be struggling to plan out what should be relatively simple days.

I tend to over analyze things, which is fabulous in my line of work, but is slowing me down lately when it comes to trip planning.

Thank you everyone for all your help. I can now see my options clearly!

Actually line 14 would work from Burano to Lido (via Punta Sabbioni). Just not sure about whether it works in winter as some routes are seasonal.

A reminder-the church on Torcello closes at 5, so if it’s on your must see, plan accordingly. It is a bit of a walk to the church from the vaporetto stop.
