Added days in Sicily

We are taking a Rick Steves 11 Day tour of Sicily. We want to stay a few extra days either after the trip in Catania area or go early and be in the Palermo area. Which would you suggest.?

Does it have to be either or? This is a terrific tour and I enjoyed adding both extra nights in Palermo at the front end and the same in Catania at the end. Each city has so much to entertain and discover. If it must be only one city that gets more time, I would choose Palermo. The numerous markets are fabulously varied and fascinating to explore. I visited mid April and experienced lovely weather. Have a great time and if your guide is Jamie, you will be in excellent hands.

For any tour, I'd add a few days at least at the beginning--as a buffer to make sure you are actually there at the start of the tour and to help you acclimate after a long flight. Tours aren't cheap. Make sure you are ready to go on day 1.

We enjoyed Palermo although it is a bit gritty. Wished we had another day or two. Catania-not so much. Felt we had just enough time there. There is a lot of Sicily not covered on this tour but you’ll need to research that and the logistics involved. The rest of Italy is a short flight from Catania so consider a few days in Rome or another destination in Italy.

I agree with Theresa. I would arrive to enjoy two more days in Palermo and I’d tack a day on at the end to spend an additional day in Catania. The Best of Sicily tour is fantastic and staying a few days extr@ just makes it better!

From my perspective, extra time is most needed in Palermo and in the southeast, where there are several lovely Baroque towns the tour doesn't cover: Ragusa, Noto, Modica and Scicli. Most folks would appreciate extra time in Siracusa as well.

When I took the Sicily tour, I added days in Palermo at the beginning and visited several sights not included in the tour. In hindsight, I would also have added at least a day in Catania at the end. Based on my experience, I suggest you divide your extra days between the beginning and end if possibile. If you can't divide them, then I suggest spending your extra days in Palermo with a possible trip to Cefalu.

If you'd consider keeping moving with a car, we had a great post-tour couple of days returning to Palermo from Catania, going diagonally across the island. Mountains, beautiful scenery, charming small towns, great agriturismos.

For staying put, Palermo.
