adaptors

Greetings, leaving for Italy soon. Anyone have any tips for my IPOD and camera in terms of adaptors?? Thanks for any comments.

be careful with what you get. adaptors and convertors are different and can really screw up your stuff. iPod's don't need anything but a simple converter from the standard american 2 prong to the european 2 prong. I've gotten mine at the grocery store's here for only a few euro's. Are you charging your camera battery?? if so, i'm using a cannon camera with the standard battery that comes with a 'cannon charger' - that does not need to be put into any adaptor, just a simple converter will do.

i've seen numerous people blow up chargers for their ipods and computers since they've been here because they plugged their american computer charger into an adaptor box that then converts to the european plug and it either blew up or smoked and fried it.

I have an eagle creek adaptor that changes the electricity current and converts it to the euro wattage...you do not want to use these for computers, it will ruin the charger and a new one cost waaay too much over here.

People here are mixing up adapter and converter.

An adapter is a plug that is attached to your devices plug so it fits into the wall.

A converter changes the electrical current going from the wall into your device.

The Ipod's charger is dual voltage therefore all you need is an adapter.

I don't know about the camera because I don't know how new it is or what model. However, if you look at it's charger, and somewhere on it it says "Input: 110-240v" then all you will need is an adapter for that as well. It is a dual voltage charger.

If the charger only says 110/120v then you will need a converter.

If you bring a computer, you have to do the same to see if it is a dual-voltage charger. Most today are.

Just to clarify, a Converter (aka Voltage Converter) is used to reduce the voltage from 220 VAC (European standard) to 115 VAC (North American standard), so that devices designed to operate solely in North American won't be damaged or destroyed. It's important to note that two different methods are used to accomplish the voltage reduction/conversion, and choosing the wrong type for a particular device can have adverse consequences. Electronic products such as IPod chargers are best used with a Transformer type Converter (usually these are only capable of 50 watts, as larger Transformers are HEAVY and wouldn't be practical to travel with).

An Adapter (aka Plug Adapter) is a simple mechanical device that allows a North American style plug to connect to the different outlet configurations used in various parts of the world. For travel only in Italy, the Euro style with two round pins should suffice (the UK model is different).

Connie, it's important that you check EACH device that you'll be travelling with to determine the Input Voltage specifications. As the others have mentioned, if these state "Input Voltage 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz" then you'll only need Plug Adapters.

Normally IPods are charged via the USB Plug on the host computer. If you need a travel charger, you might check the Sonnet Technology website. I've been using their IPod travel charger for several years, and it works well.

Which Camera are you using? Most Canon models are provided with a "world" Charger, complete with fold-out pins. I have three Canon digital models, and all of them have this feature.

Given the low cost, you might want to pack two Euro Plug Adapters. I've found that often I'm loaning one to fellow travellers, and of course there's always the possibility of forgetting one in a Hotel room.

Happy travels!

Thank you to everyone who has replied. That's what makes this site so great.
My camera is a Fujifilm finepixZ, my charger for the camera does say input: 100-240v - 50/60 Hz 90 mA 9VA. So I believe from what y'all have said an adaptor will be ok for the camera. My iPod, I'am still not sure about, I can't read the writing on the back, except its a 4 GB iPod.

Connie,

Go to Apple's website, in the product section, find your iPod and look at the tech specifications. Should tell you exactly what you have.

I was helped greatly by Magellan's step by step (for Dummies?) guide to adaptors/converters (also known as step down transformers).

Good luck!

Connie, the specifications for your IPod will most likely be on the Charger, rather than on the IPod. I suspect you only obtained a USB Cable with the IPod, so don't have a separate travel Charger?

Again, have a look at these Sonnet Chargers as they've always worked well for me.

Happy travels!
