Adapter vs. Transformer?

We will be traveling in Italy...What do I need in order charge my cell phone, rechargeable camera batteries, etc. as compared to a hair dryer, etc. Will just the European 2 prong adapter work? or do I also need a transformer of some sort? I've been told I should be able to charge my cell phone and batteries using a regular 2 prong adapter, however if using something more powerful like a hair dryer, i would need an actual transformer..HELP!

Hey matt - An adapter kit is all you'll need in Europe - I've never had a problem as long as my kit travels with me.

For nearly all of your newer electronics, check, they probably say 240V/120V. For any of these, you will only need an adapter, a plug that fits the European outlet.

For anything else, you will need an actual converter or transformer to convert 240V to 120V. Most likely the hair dryer falls into this category. If you look for a converter, you will need to know how many Watts the drier takes.

Matt,

To begin with, it's important to clarify some of the terminology you mentioned.

With the term "Adapter", I'm assuming you're referring to a Plug Adapter that adapts North American-style Plugs to fit European outlets? You'll definitely need a few of these for your trip. The Italy / Euro style has two round pins. These are available at Radio Shack, Magellans, Travel & Luggage stores or from the Travel Store on this website for a few dollars.

Regarding use of a Transformer, a few important points. Transformers are inherently heavy, and smaller 50-watt units are best for electronic products. Packing along a Transformer large enough for high wattage appliances is really not practical. Solid State Converters are preferable for appliances such as Hair Dryers.

You need to check EACH of the devices you'll be travelling with, looking specifically for the "Input Voltage" specifications. If these state "100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz" then all you'll need is an inexpensive Plug Adapter.

However if these state "115 VAC, 60 Hz" then you'll have to use voltage conversion as well. For the electronic devices, using a Transformer-style converter is highly recommended. If you do need a Voltage Converter, have a look at This Product which includes both conversion methods.

If you require any further information, post another note.

Happy travels!

If you find that the only appliance you will need the voltage transformer for is your hair dryer you may just consider buying one in Italy. You can get a cheap one for around 12-15 euros which is about the same price as the converter. It will also weigh a lot less. I bought a hair dryer years ago and take it on every trip to Italy.

Another thing I have learned, both from my own experiences and hearing from others, is that flat irons don't work very well when using the converter. It is better to leave it at home. I don't know if you were considering bringing one but I thought I'd let you know.

As previous indicated, anything requiring high wattage such as hair dryers do not do well with a converter or transformer and over time probably will be damaged. My wife quit carrying a hair dryer a number of years because we have found that hair dryers are always available. If not in the bathroom, then a loaner is available from the front desk. The need to carry a hair dryer is very low.

I have come to the point of buying a small curling iron/flat iron in Europe. Cheaper than burning up the expensive one here!!
