Across from Lake Como

We will be visiting Lake Como briefly. If we were to cross over to Switzerland, can anyone please tell me what there is to do just across the border or very nearby?

It's decades since my last trip to Switzerland, but I always enjoyed Lugano (on Lake Lugano) for its non-Swiss liveliness. Coming from Italy, it might not have the same effect on you. There are some picturesque lakeside towns accessible from Lugano by boat or bus, including Gandria and Morcote.

Beyond Lugano you have the non-touristy city of Bellinzona, with multiple castles. West of Bellinzona is the popular destination of Locarno on Lake Maggiore. It has the feel of a Belle Epoque resort and was never a favorite of mine. It does, however, have good postbus rides heading into the Valle Verzasca and Valle Maggia. Locarno is also the starting point of the scenic Centovalli railroad line that terminates in Domodossola, Italy. A loop trip should be possible, but I haven't checked the schedules.
