Acquiring a phone card?

I have a GSM phone with (T-Mobile). Has anyone bought a phone SIMM card with both call and data use in Italy ( Venice more specifically )? If you did, whom, where and how much was it? These new phones have so many neat features, that they are a great tool to have while traveling. But if you use your USA plan, get ready to get hosed. Just ask my father in law. His went to the tune of $450.00. OUCH!!! So be careful and shut your phone down when you get to EU or get a card there with a new number.

if your phone has wifi i'd just use skype for calls. wifi hotspot is widely available and internet cafes are very easy to find. it's pretty easy to do away without cellular, if you can do wifi.

I have been wondering about the same thing as I plan to bring my unlocked android phone on my 3 weeks travels in Italy late April. I asked on trip advisor and learned:
"There is an Internet Cafè that sells Wind Sims near the Guglie bridge, on the south side of Rio Terà San Leonardo (next to where the laundromat used to be, for those that remember it). There are also a Wind store near the Rialto market. Vodaphone at the bottom of the Rialto ( Campo Bartolomeo side) TIM in strada nuova not far from San Marcuola. WInd escapes me right now. I know 3 is not far from ponte del anconeta."
