Accomodations Rome City Center

Good morning all. I am doing a favor for some friends looking for a nice accomodation in Rome city center. It will be their honeymoon but they don't want the plush "wine and dine" hotels. A nice euro 4 star would suffice them. Any suggestions?

Hi Lee. Not sure of your friend's budget is but check out this place: http://www.fortysevenhotel.com/ I've stayed here a couple of times when renting an apartment didn't make since. It's nice without being overly stuffy (and easier on the wallet than others in it's class) and even when I'm not staying there, I visit the rooftop bar. It's got one of the coolest views over a couple of Republican era temples. I would pay the extra for the room with the balcony overlooking it too if this is a honeymoon splurge. There's a turkish bath in the basement and the breakfast is huge. You can walk everywhere from here. Good luck!

First, good for you! Now, a note about star ratings in Italy. They're not related to the quality of the hotel, but instead relate to what kinds of amenities are offered, such as elevator, parking lot, 24 hour front desk, etc. There are many 2 star and 3 star places that are much nicer than many 4 star places. You might pick up a copy of the RS Italy book (grab one at the library, if you don't want to buy one for this favor you're doing), and look at the various options. I suggest looking for a place in the general area formed by Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Forum and Campo de' Fiori, to put them in the heart of the city. However, if they want to be just a little removed from it, and get more of a medieval town experience, consider the neighborhood of Trastevere, just across the river from the historic center. Here are some photos I took during our stay in Trastevere in May 2008. We loved it there, and it might be more romantic than the center of Rome

I also like the forty-seven and have been there often to meet folks. As Leslie says, the view from their rooftop bar is impressive. If it's their first time in the city, I'd agree that a downtown, "centro" would be a memorable experience. These links have the best-rated accommodations in the centro area.. and also near the Colosseo (and the forty-seven makes the list!): Here are the "best-rated" in the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Colosseo and Monti areas. Good luck in your search!
