I have only stayed in one place in Orvietto and it was great. I am not sure of the cost but it is La Badia di Orvieto. The room was large and comfortable and the food at the hotel was magnificent.
We found Hotel Corso in a Rick Steves Guide and selected it because it was near the funicular and we came by train and walking with luggage would have been an issue. We liked it--clean room with good bed, nice breakfast, and it had a nice terrace. The room was plain but nice and clean with ensuite bathroom. I think it was around 86E in 2005. It was good to save $ on room and use extra $ for wonderful lunch at I Sette Consoli in Orvieto. Great little town.
Kay,
I have enjoyed Valentina's http://www.argoweb.it/bedandbreakfast_valentina/valentina.uk.html
Kay, I'd also recommend Hotel Corso in Orvieto. I stayed there last year and was very pleased with the accomodations.
I heard stories from others that the Hotel had a "problem" with the breakfast the day before I arrived, however from my experience the breakfast was great!
Happy travels!
Hi: Everyone seems to recommend the same hotel. I guess it must be a good one. I also saw a B&B on the outskirts of town called Casa Selita (looks gorgeous) that is located near the base of the elevator. Does anyone know about this elevator, or escalotor??
Kay
Kay, I didn't see an escalator or elevator when I was in Orvieto? There is a Funicular though, which takes visitors from the train station up to the town (buy tickets at the Tabachi in the train station - I believe they are effective for 70 minutes, so possible to take more than one trip).
Cheers!
Kay,
The escalator takes you right up into the town but I don't remember anything but the parking lot being near the base of it.
In July 2005 three of us had a reservation for Valentina's B&B. When we arrived she told us that she had sudden serious plumbing problems but that her mother had room for us around the corner. So we spent the next 3 nights at B&B La Soffitta. And we loved it and her mother Maria! We paid about $85 a night for the 3 of us, which included a nice breakfast. Maria gave us some lovely suggestions for hikes around the perimeter of Orvieto, including walking us over to the starting point, and even drove us to the train station on our departure morning! As you might imagine, we loved staying at her place (she actually lives in a separate flat downstairs) and would happily stay again. If you google B&B La Soffitta you can find her contact information. And enjoy your time in Orvieto -- it's a beautiful and relaxing place to spend a few days.
