I like Allogia Alla Scala- I stayed there in 2003 and 2008. They did a remodel in between. The room was large for Venice and our bathroom was clean and nice. The location is centrally located with Rialto, San Marco and Academia all being within easy walking distance. Our room overlooked the square with the famous staircase, and we could watch Rick Steve's traveler coming by and looking at it when they were doing one of his walks in the Venice book-lol. My sister's room over looked a canal- great fun to watch the gondolas, but it was noisy. The room is around 85 euros a night if you pay cash-a little more for credit. It is a screaming deal for the area you are in. I tried a few other recommendations in that price range, but some didn't offer a private bath (I prefer one) and others never responded (probably because they had nothing available for the date) Venice is so expensive and reasonably priced places fill up fast. Have a great trip. Allogia Alla Scala is in the RS book, or you can google the name and their web site will come up.

It's always helpful to know what you consider "isn't expensive". To me, that suggests places that are well under 100 euro, which, in Venice, often means hotels with shared bathrooms on the hall.

If that's your range, I can recommend the Hotel Santa Lucia near the train station. It's is quite clean, has a small garden for breakfast, large bright rooms and air conditioning.

Another budget hotel I've stayed in is the Albergo Marin, also near the train station. It was a bit more dingy but still quite acceptable. I think it may have been remodeled since I stayed there, though and could be more expensive now.

Often very cheap hotels in Venice don't have air-condition. Not a problem in the winter, but in the summer can be a huge deal!

Hi Sharon,

I was in Venice this past October and chose one of Rick's recommended hotels, Locanda Silva. It's a relatively small simple place but clean and comfortable with a very friendly, helpful staff. There is the choice for a room with a bathroom or without; the shared bathrooms/showers are in the hall and are also very clean. (I checked them out.) Lastly, this place had fabulous location; no more than a 2-3 minute walk to St. Mark's Square and a 5 minute walk to the Rialto Bridge. I would definitely stay there again.

In Venice it is a hostel for per night costs of less than $100 dollars for a single. You will be in a dorm setting. Otherwise consider staying in adjacent Mestre.

Several years ago I went to Venere.com to find Venice hotels. I found Hotel Tivoli, checked it out on Tripadvisor.com and made a reservation. The place was fine, breakfast was included, and it was in an interesting area. It was inexpensive, around 60 EU/night for a single, as I recall. I suggest you try the same technique. Another way to find a hotel is to e-mail several that sound ok (from RS books or others) and wait for responses. You may get a response that you like. I've used that technique, also, but with Venere.com you can find a vacancy and make your reservation immediately. Venice has many interesting neighborhoods that are easy to get to, so if you are flexible regarding location (not Mestre) you will have better luck finding a budget hotel.

Sharon, Two years ago we stayed at a small hotel in Cannaregio called Locanda Novo and liked it very much. The room was beautiful and we actually had a separate sitting room. They even brought our breakfast to the room and the hotel was not very expensive. The only downside was that we had a room on the 3rd floor and there was no elevator. But we didn't mind. Check out their website, www.locandanovo.it

My wife and I are HUGE fans of Locanda al Leon near San Marco: good price (about e125?), GREAT location, charming rooms, nice simple Italian breakfast, and such friendly service. Been there twice this year and wish we could go back tomorrow!

check out Hotel Mercurio... very nice hotel, rooms with private bath and some with shared. in 2006 room rate was 145E/night including breakfast.

Location near Piazza San Marco - but on a nice quiet street off the main drag.

Hi, I stayed at Le Mansarde, near the Jewish Ghetto. It was mentioned in one of Rick's books, and is easy to find on Trip Advisor. It is a B&B, very clean, private bathroom, 1 block from vaporetto stops. If you like staying with the people in a residential area, you will love it!

Sharon:
My wife and I stayed at Hotel Delfino in Mestre late November. It's a 4 star hotel and through their internet offer, we paid 129 euros for two days stay in a double room, breakfast included. There is bus stop right infront of the hotel and it will take you only 5 - 7 minutes to reach Venice. There is a grocery store right next to the hotel called PAM. You can save money by staying in Mestre and relax back in the evening away from the high pace of Venice. I highly recommend Hotel Delfino.

We liked the apartment we rented from Hotel d'Art. We were traveling with five (three kids) so the apartment worked out really well for us. It was cheaper than our lodging in CT, Florence or Rome. Nothing fancy and no view except the alley we were in but worked well for us.

Since you are interested in cost, I also suggest you stay in Mestre. It is a few minutes west of Venice. You can ride the train or bus. When I was there 15 years ago I paid 25c on the RR.

Rooms there are a fraction of the cost you will find in Venice. And there are many hotels a block or two from the RR station.

Carl is certainly right about Mestre being cheaper...BUT staying there, and saving money that way, after having paid all that money to just GET to Venice, would be a little like going to a great new Italian restaurant you've been just dying to try...and ordering a chicken sandwich because it's cheaper than the lasagna. I say go for the lasagna, and find another way to save money (such as on food in Venice...eat cheaply, none of it's great there, anyway, and pizza by the slice and small tapas-like snacks are readily available).

I also think that staying in Mestre while it might save a few bucks makes you like one of the thousands of daytrippers that crowd Venice during the day and then leave in the evening.Venice is magic at night.

Unless I missed it - when you are going and for how long would be key to answering the question.

We always book an apartment but generally stay 1-2 weeks.

They are moderate price, you can cook if you like there is a washing machine, more private I feel.

If you opt to stay in Mestre (which I don't recommend) plan to spend at least one evening in Venice. Jack is right. Venice during the day is worth the trip. But Venice at night- it is magical.

I stayed at the Hotel Albergo Doni. It has a small private bathoom...no tub. It is just a few blocks from St Mark's square and reasonably priced. It was clean and reasonably spacious. Easy to get to.

Our family stayed at Casa Mimma (http://www.casamimma.it/index.html)in April 2008.
It is a small establishment (4 rooms, I think. You carry a key to the front door); but it was clean, the rooms were spacious, the neighborhood was interesting and close to a vaporetto stop. We enjoyed our evening walk to the neighborhood campo for gelato and people-watching. Being in Venice at night and then exploring again at 7:00am was one of my favorite experiences of Venice.

Sharon,

I also stayed at Albergo Doni in Venice, and would certainly recommend it. It's in a very old building, but the location is very convenient, the breakfasts fairly good and the staff were great.

If you want to check a number of listings in different price ranges, check the Italy Guidebook.

Cheers!

We stayed for 4 nights at the Hotel Mocenigo - the 2nd stop on the water taxi from Piazza Roma. It was also in RS's book. It is a JEWEL at the end of a tiny alley, alongside a tiny canal. Brass accents, plush, huge bathrooms and equisite rooms. Beautiful stone patio for breakfast in the mornings (or inside if it's cold) and made-to-order apricot scones and cappuchino! Free internet too. Extremely friendly and helpful staff-very personable! About 5-6 min. walk to Rialto and another 5-6 to St. Mark's. About $150 US a night; less for cash. RS said it's a great price because it's not right on St. Mark's. Atmosphere is everything-I'd stay again in a heartbeat. http://www.alpontemocenigo.com

Hi,

In 2002, the chamber choir that I belong to did a tour of Italy. We sang our way from my Milan to Rome. During the tour we spent 14 hours in Venice. It wasn't long enough, Sooooooo, two years later in September 04' my best friend and I went back and spent 9 glorious days. Our hotel was the Ca'Formenta up above the Basilica San Marco on the Via Garibaldi. It overlooks the lagoon, the rooms are spacious and the bathroom was lovely. The biggest reason I mention it, is that the hotel's customer service was outstanding. The night before we were to leave I discovered that I had left my passport at the Palazzo Grassi, after attending an exhibition there. Our concierge phone the museum to confirm that my passport was there, then made arrangements for a member of the night staff to stop by the security office at the museum and pick up my passport, as I would never have made it before they closed. By 11 pm that night I had my passport back. They are also in a lovely neighborhood with many small shops and family resturants, really, really good resturants, to eat at. It is moderately priced with a good atmosphere. Now my problem is we are going to Italy again in July 09, and at the end we want to spend a few extra days putzing around Venice, maybe going up to Verona to see the opera at the roman colesium there. Does anyone have some suggestions on where to stay in Verona that doesn't cost the earth and is close to where the opera will be performed? All suggestions welcome, and thanks ahead of time for any and all help.

MPARRY

I have been looking at a place called Ca'Bonvicini in Venice. Has anyone stayed there before?
