We have a friend in Florence who runs a small B&B about 200m from Duomo. http://www.florenceby.com/letrestanze/pages/reach.htm or [email protected]
Beni is the operator. The rooms are very large and open, furnished with an eclectic decor. Beni is... well Beni. Some what eccentric, but a very big heart. She is Swiss but has been in Italy for some fifteen years now. She has an intimate knowledge of Florence, and can direct you to local restaurants and shops. She can also give you the numbers to pre-book your tickets to Uffizi or Academia. I felt the rates have been reasonable when considering the location and size of the rooms. Just remember that Beni is Beni, but we love her.
Have you tried looking for these in the trip advisor or venere websites. They give peoples crits and I generally use this to book my accommodation. It always works for me.
We have stayed at pensione allesandra, right by ponte vecchio. It was clean and accomodating and we really liked the location. Our room had an enormous modern bathroom which was a surprise for italy. And our room - a twin bed room - was very very large. We liked it.
In April '06, we stayed at the Hotel Silla in Florence. It's old and full of charm, clean, great breakfast, friendly staff, walking distance of the bridge, lots of little shops, Pitti Palace, etc.
And...there's an elevator!
I love the Relais Uffizi in Florence. It's a bit pricey ($245 for double right now), but it is right in the middle of where you want to be - the Plaza Signoria, just next to Uffizi and the Medici Palace. You can walk all over from here, and get your gelato right down stairs.
Charming rooms and ambience. A great place for romantics.
