Please suggest a place to stay for 2, in our early 60s/ comfortable and clean, not fancy, near trains. Would like to visit Parma, Balogna and nearby towns for 3-4 days. Arriving by train from Cinque Terra at Bologna, mid Oct. Thanks. Mark
I spent 3 days in Bologna and loved it. I stayed at the Abrego Centrale - just a couple blocks from the main square. The food in Bologna is wonderful and it is a great place to just walk around. I joined a walking tour from the tourist info office one day and it
was GREAT.
Frances means Albergo Centrale in Bologna. "Albergo" is an Italian word for "hotel".
You would like the Hotel San Donato at via Zamboni 16 in Bologna. Very close to the piazza and San Petrino church and Neptunes fountain. A very short walk from a good restaurant (Benso) for dinner, as well. Also a great gelato story a short walk to the left out the front door of the hotel. It is a short taxi ride from the train station. The front desk will have a taxi available for your departure back to the train station....you will be given a number and can wait for your taxi out front.
I forgot to say that the hotel is close to the street of food vendors. We bought cheese, salami, olives, cookies, etc and had a "picnic" lunch both days we were in Bologna last year. Also, the room price at the San donato includes breakfast....which can be eaten on their terrace with a great view of the towers around town.
Thank you all for your info. Very helpful. My 1st inclination was this area, more recently I have been introduced to the Piedmont region. Sorrily I must choose one or the other. We travell in Oct so I have a bit of time to plan. Mark
