accomodation taxes in Italy seem excessive. Are they legit?

We are renting an AirBnB apartment in Rome, Italy. I Paid for the total up front, but now I'm told of Rome taxes 3.5 euro per person per day plus 56 euro for
Rome city tax. All paid in cash on arrival.
Fine, if that's true. Is it?

There is a city lodging tax in Rome (and in many other Italian cities), and it is typically paid in cash when you arrive at the hotel. The Rome tourism website seems to have the official information.

The nightly taxes per person (for up to 10 nights except as noted) are:

1- and 2-Star Hotels: 3 euros
3-Star Hotels: 4 euros
4-Star Hotels: 6 euros
5-Star Hotels: 7 euros
B&Bs, apartments: 3.50 euros
Agriturismi: 4 euros
Campgrounds: 2 euros (charge limited to 5 nights)

I have no idea what the "plus 56 euro for Rome city tax" might be. Is that perhaps simply the total you are to pay--eight nights for two people in an apartment (8 x 3.50 x 2)?

Hey frankie,

I stay in a hotel near Termini. They charge 6€ per night city tax up to 10 nights. Since i stay about two weeks (14 days), I had to pay only 60€ on top of my hotel bill. Doing the math, yeah, it comes out to 56€. City taxes are legit depending on the "rating" as noted already.

Wow, A Craven, you are on the ball! You must live in Europe or you are a travel agent! Thanks for replies. It's good to know this.
I will politely delete my question on the forum.
Thanks!
Frankie

No need to delete your question! It was a good one, and it may save a future traveler time to see your question and the responses.

I ran into the city tax myself a few years ago, so I knew if I Googled I could probably find the current rates,
