Accomodation Question re: Florence/Sienna

Hello!

My husband and will be in Italy this September. We will arrive by train to Florence in the morning, and we are debating between spending two nights in Florence, and visiting Sienna on our way to Rome, or else spending one night in Florence, and then one night in Sienna before arriving in Rome. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

It all depends on what you want from the experience, but I would recommend two nights in Florence and a day trip to Sienna. Both are lovely cities, but there is just too much to see and do in Florence for a one night stop. Take your time and enjoy the flavor of Italy...I find the less I try to do there, the richer the experiences. Go where the locals hang out and soak every possible moment of it up to bring back the best memories.

I agree with Teri. Florence requires at least 2 days. Siena would make a nice stop on the way to Rome.

One thing I really learned from our recent trip to Rome, Assisi and Florence is that we decided early on not to try to do too many cities in one 10 day trip. Because we wanted to have an enriched cultural experience, we stayed three days in Rome, one day/overnight in Assisi and four days in Florence (two days were travel days from the US to Italy and back again). We actually planned to do a day trip to Sienna but Florence had so much we wanted to see and experience at a reasonably relaxed pace that we ended up skipping Sienna.

Another thing we missed was the countryside except as it passed by while traveling by train. So our next dream trip will be Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast.
