HI, I am so over this search for accomodation. Can anyone have any opinions on the district of Aurelio or the area around the roma Terini. I am after something within a resonably central area, not to expensive. Any suggestions are truly appreciated.
I think you might mean Termini - the area around the railway station. Although you will find some negative views on this area, we stayed there for a few nights several years ago and it was absolutely fine. Although not as central as other locations it is cheaper. We felt quite safe there and walked pretty much everywhere.
We atayed at the Hotel Kennedy which is a budget hotel, but fine and is in a street lined with restaurants.
The other area I do not know but I would suggest you not stay outside Rome. Rome is a very accessible city and you can walk most places if you stay reasonably centrally.
try the hotel canada 5 min from termini very nice place. check out the reviews on trip advisor. good luck :):):)
You might check out places on the web site cross-pollinate.com. We used them for a trip last October and were pleased with the apartment. It was not expensive and not fancy. We ended up in an area one metro stop south of the Forum area. Many of their places are located right near Termini station. We needed an apartment and I looked at a lot of web sites that rent apartments. Their offerings were the most economical. (Of course, some of the other places were fancy but we just wanted clean and comfortable. We ended up with a 2 bedroom 2 bath LARGE unit for 130 euros a night. We were 2 couples traveling together and it was perfect for us.)
Termini is good for train travelers because you can arrive, hop off the train, and walk to your hotel. Obviously Termini is also the hub of the Rome Metro system so that's added convenience. However, the metro does not go to the historical center like Campo dei Fiori or Piazza Navona. So if ease of traveling is what you're looking for then Termini is a good choice.
We prefer to stay in the historical center and just wake up and walk from there. But that's not everyone's cup-o-tea and that's ok.
Thankyou so much, I appreciate you advise. I have now destressed.... and ready to hit those accomodations sites.. again... but with a clearer view. TY
The area near Termini gets a bad rap. It's not as bad as some people lead you to believe and there are some great bargains there. If you provide your budget and the time of year you will be traveling we can suggest specific places to stay.
We stayed in the Termini area this fall and were pleased enough. It may not be the most glamorous neighborhood in Rome but was packed with reasonable small hotels, B&B's, resturants and other services valuable to tourists. And we always felt safe. If all roads lead to Rome, then most Roman roads lead to Termini. No matter where you are in the city, most any bus or metro will take you back to this area--a convenience we enjoyed a lot every one of the several days we spent tooling around Rome.
I've always stayed within a 10-min walk of Termini. I like to get my luggage parked in a hotel close to the train station. There must be dozens of decent places to stay in that general area. Check in Rick's books or websites such as www.venere.com. The Let's Go series of travel books also have budget listings.
We will be away for 5 weeks. In Rome early April for 5 nights before moving on to Naples. I am travelling with my 2 teenage girls so area is a bit of a concern. Budget, well clean & comfortable but of course it is really only a place to sleep. If I can keep it under 140 euro a night,I would be happy but not restricted to. Also, staying near the Vatican, that looks to out of the way, would that be correct? Thankyou for your insights, I do appreciate it.
Stayed up at Best Western Spring House (see Ricks book). Was cheap, clean and staff good. American breakfast good also. Staying there again this year.===Bill
Hi Vanessa !
My sister and I are going to Rome in September and were also looking for a hotel near Termini. I went on to google maps and placed the little Google guy at Termini and started walking up and down the streets to see what they look like, how wide they are, if there are restaurants near and the general look of the area and the hotel. We found Hotel Columbia and hope that it will turn out to be a good choice. We find that the research and anticipation of a trip is great fun and walking around the streets of Rome (Florence too)in this way familiarizes you with the area. After reading all the travelers scams !! it is important to look like you know where you are going.
We stayed at Suore St. Elisabetta near the Termini and very close to St. Maria Magiore (to give you an idea of location), a short walk to the Forum. This is a convent. It was very clean, quiet, safe, large rooms and baths, and a decent simple breakfast included. In 2007 it was 83 euros/night. 11pm curfew but we were so tired by then we couldn't have walked anymore anyway. Check it out on tripadvisor.com. We got it from Rick's 2007 book. Vanessa--
We stayed at the Target Hotel near Termini. Don't know if they have larger accommodations than our room, which had two double (queen?) beds. Clean, close to the subway line, walkable to the Colisseum. We walked around until midnight and never felt unsafe.
As we wandered, we noticed small hotels seemingly everywhere. Our building had at least 3!
The Vatican per se is a little out of the way if your goal is to see things like the Forum. We took the subway to get there, just to have more time at the sites.
