Accomodation in Amalfi area

We want to experience the Amalfi area, especially Pompeii, Capri, and the Archeological Museum in Naples. Please help with an accomodation that is convenient for transportation to get to those places, and in itself, a nice place to come home to--ie. roof-top views etc. No need for pools, beaches as we will be there in early April.

Laura, if you do decide to base in Positano (and your budget will allow), you might have a look at Le Sirenuse. The web site is www.sirenuse.it (I regularly check their Webcams just to remind me of how much I want to travel there!).

Cheers!

Hi Laura,

If you want the Amalfi Coast and Sorrentine Peninsula with Naples, you might think about Sorrento. sorrento is considered a small HUB for all these areas.

From Naples, you can take the regional train to Sorrento (Circumvesuviana).
From Sorrento you can access Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples by train. Amalfi, Positano & Ravello by SITA Bus. (there are specail tickets for tourists that includes all these transportation).

Also, you can go to Capri with the Hydrofoil in 30 minutes.

For Hotels, there are so many, nice ones also some BB that are nice.
One of my favorites is La Minervetta.www.laminervetta.com

Also, Several hotels as the Trmaontano, Europa Palace, Excelsior Victoria.

I can help you furthershould you need.

Thanks,
Cinthya

Laura, Positano is the best place on the Amalfi Coast...in my humble opinion. A great hotel there with room balconies and breakfast terrace both overlooking the water is the Hotel California. As a bonus, if you're driving, they have free inside parking, which is worth about 30 Euro/day.

Here's a 2nd vote for Sorrento and Hotel Minerva. Spent a week there in May 07. Perfect home base for Capri, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, and Naples. Overall we were very disappointed with Naples and it is now considered a destination on our been there, done that list. Sorrento is beautiful and very relaxing. While Hotel Minerva is about a 10 minute walk into town, our room with a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples could not be beat. Enjoy. Karen

The only downside to Positano is its lack of rail service.

We stayed in Positano in September of 2005 and I loved it. We rented an apartment, but I can't remember the name of the company, maybe Ville Italia. It was above the town, and a hike down, and inside it was just like staying in a condo in Destin, but the views from the LARGE balcony we had made up for it. One other warning, the beds were very uncomfortable, but I would stay there again for the balcony and the washing machine. We had a car and I drove and did not think it was that bad although my husband said he would never drive there again. In fact, he said he was glad he saw the Amalfi Coast but didn't want to come back and then we went to Ravello. He fell in love with it and we plan to go back some day and stay at the Palazzo Sasso. We took the ferry to Capri, went to Sorrento and took the train to Pompeii and Herculaneum. I think Positano is a great place to stay. Be sure and eat at Da Costantino if you go there.

Positano is very beautiful and worth a few days. You can visit Pompeii and Capri easily. We loved the Hotel Pasitea. The patio was huge and the view breathtaking. La Sirenuse is 1st class if your budget allows, if not go for a drink and enjoy the view.

I vote for Sorrento as well...can't beat the transportatioon options from there (although I am also a big fan of Salerno foor a more "real" experience and on the train line, easy to get to the ferries - no big hill ;-) and direct busses to Amalfi, Pompeii, Paestum, etc.) I think Sorrento has more of the "feel" you are looking for though!
