Accommodations -- Venice, Florence, Vernazza, and Rome

Hello! Recommendations on accommodations in the cities above? We are not on a shoestring budget by any means but certainly don't plan to spend extended time where we are staying other than to sleep so no need to be spending 200-300 euro a night. Only request from the husband is a private bathroom -- he would have hated to see the way I traveled 10 years ago! :)

We will be arriving in each city by train and would love to be able to not have to haul luggage very far but at the same time would like to get a little more "local" feel and a little less "tourist" feel. We will be going next October 2017 and want to start looking now because I see that many places book up at least 9-10 months in advance.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Hello. We just got back from a 20 day trip to Italy that was awesome. We stayed in apartments and booked through Airb&b and one through Trip Advisor. Recommendations for Florence was an apartment on Trip Advisor labeled " Florence Central 2 bedroom apartment with garage. It was a lovely and quite large 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment with a good size kitchen and living room. Looks exactly like the pictures on Trip Advisor. We had a great experience there and with the host Monica . It is just a couple miles from the main train station , a short and inexpensive taxi ride or you can schedule a NCC private driver who can greet you at train station and help with luggage for not too much money. The host can probably also arrange that for you if needed.

We walked everyday down to the Baptistry, the Duomo , Uffizi, Accademia and Ponte Vecchio. Looked like a ways on the map but it really wasn't a far walk at all. Also close by were a couple little markets to buy a few groceries for breakfast and snacks. I hope to stay there again when we return to Florence . The building it is in was very nice. Bathrooms were great too , has a washing machine also.

Our Venice apartment was great too but only 1 bedroom and 1 bath. Although the bathroom was a pretty good size and the living room leather sectional folded out to another bed. Newly renovated too. If interested i can send info in it too.

Check the Florence one out for sure , we were very pleased with the accommodations and it had air conditioning.

We are going to these cities in late Aug/Sept.. We are a family of 4 but most of these places are 1 bedrooms (that will accommodate 4 w/a pullout...) so they could work for you. All are under 200 with the exception of the Florence place. I did a lot of research (and checked this forum/asked a lot of questions here...) -- looking for neighborhoods that would provide some interest and were within walking distance to major sights/metro... each place has A/C, wifi and at least one private bath..

Venice: AirBNB "Near Teatro La Fenice (wifi)"

Florence: (staying 10min outside of the city- on a villa in a private cottage-- but they have other accomodations-- this is a our splurge.. but the bus stops every 10min. at their gate to take you to Florence and it's a 5 min. walk to the village of Imprunetta..- http://www.relaisvillalolmo.com

Vernazza: http://www.francamaria.com (hold w/a credit card but pay in cash there...) Maybe tourists season will be done by the time you get there but we had to book this in April for Sept-- we wanted to stay in Vernazza and things were booking quickly back then

Rome: VRBO "Icarus Daedalus and Apartments, in the Heart of Downtown Rome - DEDALO apartment this is a 2bed/2 bath.."

My sister will be joining us in Rome and staying just down the street from us at a B&B that looks wonderful and has a private bath: http://www.freedominrome.com/en/ You can also book it through booking.com: http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/piazza-della-liberta.it.html or trip advisor..

I was in Venice a few days ago and stayed in Hotel S. Lucia. I thought it was great. I paid 55 euro a night for a room with shared bath, so I can't imagine a room with private bath is much more. Very close to the train station so it meets your not carrying luggage far but not your neighborhood feel. However it is down a small alley so the actual hotel is very quiet.

It's great that you're getting such an early start on planning.

Are you interested more in hotels or apartments? I only stay in hotels, as I prefer places that provide a good breakfast.

A few thoughts on each of the places on your list....

  • Venice - Pensione Guerrato is a very popular choice.
  • Florence - you could have a look at Katti House.
  • Vernazza - I'll have to leave that question to the others, as I'm more familiar with the lodgings in Monterosso. Vernazza doesn't have any hotels per se, but rather small Affittacamere which may or may not provide breakfast. Some of them may involve many stairs from street level.
  • Rome - before recommending accommodations in Rome, it would help to know whether you have a preference for any particular part of the city? You might find it helpful to pick up a copy of the RS Italy 2017 guidebook as soon as it becomes available (September?), as that has great listings for hotels in various parts of Rome (as well as the other places you'll be visiting).

Good luck with your planning!
