Accommodations sold out in Sorento

Hi, all.

My 4 adult children and I are doing a 2-week trip to Southern Italy in mid-September. We will do a week in Rome and also see Naples and Pompeii. We would like to spend the remaining time staying and seeing the Amalfi Coast. The problem: Sorrento is sold out of decent accommodations. Is there another town that you can recommend as our "base" that has good access to ferries, public transportation, etc.? Can you also recommend a private boat company and a car service? We will not have a car. Thank you in advance!

Have you checked Booking.com?

Take a look at Salerno-actually on the AC and better transportation wise, less expensive, less touristy and easy access by fast train to Rome and Naples
Also easy access to Paestum

Thank you, Christine. I will check Salerno. I have looked on Booking.com and Hotels.com, Tripadvisor, Airbnb, and Vrbo.

hey hey shakorycreative
you are kinda late with reserving plus 5 people, decent places have been booked months in advance.
are you looking for 2 hotel room, an apt for all, budget in euros, dates, amenities hoping & wanting for. it's still consider high season, harvests for wine & olive oil, festivals/fairs. it will be crowded. many want sorrento, look at a smaller town nearby to fit your gang.
search button: sorrento accomodations, transportation, activities and click 6 months to a year for what is mentioned.
booking.com
left side has the filters to check, look on map what's available. just be prepared.
tripadvisor.com
trivago.com
airbnb & vrbo
when you find something book it, you can email hotel/apt for maybe a better price or if they have something not listed on any site.
good luck and happy hunting. have a great time

Hi Cheryl,

We are going to Amalfi Coast from the 9-14 September and booked months ago, even then accommodations were tight. Looks like you are trying to book multiple rooms which can make things a bit more challenging. The recommendation of Salerno is a good one as it has easy access to transportation. An alternative is to look at the town of Amalfi which also has a good transportation hub. The ferries can be a good way to get around the Amalfi Coast, but they are subject to weather cancellations. One of the reasons we are going back is that our trip in May of 2023 it rained the entire time and the ferries were cancelled from Sorrento and Positano. The buses can be very crowded, so getting a private driver is a good way to go.

We are using Wine Tours Amalfi Coast to provide a transfer from the train station to Ravello as well as a transfer from Ravello to Sorrento (with a stop at Pompei and wine tasting at Mt. Vesuvius. In 2023, we used this service run by a lovely man, Daniele who is also a Sommelier for a tour of the Amalfi Coast and wine tasting. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Another alternative, is to look at Mondo tours who can do private transfers and we used them to pick us up from the train station in Naples and take us to Pompeii prior to a dropping us off at our hotel in Positano. The driver was timely and professional and the guide they had for us in Pompeii was excellent. Mondo also has very cost-effective group tours that you can explore. We will use Mondo tours for Capri. The only reason we are not using them for transfer, is we really like Daniele and his team at Wine Tours Amalfi Coast. They crafted such a personal and enjoyable experience. As a wine lover is great to have a sommelier as your guide. If Daniele was not available, I would have happily engaged with Mondo tours.

We used Aldo Limos. They were professional, prompt and the drivers had great English. Christina, in the front office, is a Brit, so email communications were easy. Good luck!

Just maybe you'll get lucky here: try ilnido.it (il Nido). It's a family run hotel above the city of Sorrento. Beautiful, comfortable and affordable with an excellent breakfast buffet and amazing dinner menu. It's above the city but they have a shuttle bus that is very convenient for getting to and from there. I've stayed there probably almost a dozen times and can't recommend it highly enough!

Just to be clear:

The problem: Sorrento is sold out of decent accommodations.

I'm sure there are some fine accommodations left but maybe not at your price point? What is the per-night $ you're looking for? This is an expensive destination, and especially so during high season. Exploring accommodations on booking.com per your budget is a good idea. Looking at Salerno versus Sorrento is also a very good idea.

Sorrento has more accomodations than anywhere on the AC or Salerno so if everything there is sold out or not in your price range/to your liking you will probably not find much in the other locations.

You may need to increase your budget or alter your needs- 2 rooms, instead of an apartment etc.
Can dates be changed? Do you have flights already booked?

Can you share your dates? You are really late to Sept booking.

@ChristineH, yes I am late. A combination of my husband passing away and my children trying to work out work schedules, BUT I have more than half the trip worked out with accommodations. There are places in Minori and Mairi and a few close to Sorrento, but not in Sorrento. I am sure we will get something. I was mostly concerned with transportation, but there are some excellent suggestions in this thread.

Minori and Maiori are both great choices, both have ferry service right?

A forum search will bring up recommended car service. Although once you book accomodations your best source for driver is your host.

Figure out how you will get to/from, especially for your departure flight.

Services recommended here

To begin with, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.

I'm a bit late getting into the discussion, but have a few thoughts to add.

It would help if you could clarify your criteria of "decent accommodations". Are you looking for a hotel, Air BnB or other types? Sorrento has a good range of hotels and it's hard to believe that they're all sold out in mid-September. Perhaps they aren't booking for September yet?

You could also check out your local library or book stores and have a look at the current Rick Steves Italy guidebook. The accommodations listed there are all checked by Rick or his staff, so they're reliable. The guidebook also has information on local car services, trains, ferries, etc. The books are also available in Kindle or Apple Books format. I've found that having that information at hand makes the planning a lot easier.

As previous replies suggested, you could also check other towns along the Amalfi Coast. Positano might be a bit problematic as transportation there can be a bit challenging at times. Salerno is another possibility. Check the Trenitalia website for information on trains in the area or this website - https://www.campaniaexpress.it/?locale=en .

That's all that comes to mind at the moment. If I think of anything else, I'll post again.
