We will be in Italy May/June this year. Our itinerary has us in the Florence area for 5 nights. We want to see Sienna, Lucca, Pisa and of course Florence. We will have a rental car so we can see some of the Tuscan countryside. Does anyone have suggestions on where to stay to avoid taking the car into the dreaded non traffic zones. Also any suggestions on other places to visit or maybe a wine tour would be appreciated.
Check with Hotel David in Florence---it is across the river from the center. Their website says they are outside the restricted area and they offer free secure parking to guests.
Sheree, two years ago we stayed at the Hilton Florence Metropole Hotel. It was easily accessible from the autobahn. Their free shuttle bus ride into/out of the city lets you off at the train station. It was a great location and actually very reasonably priced. Check it out at www.hilton.com Have fun on your trip!
Driving anywhere in the metropolitan Florence area will be stressful-not impossible, but stressful. My husband did it once and said never again. You might look for something on the outskirts and ride the bus into the heart of the city. We actually stayed up in the hill of Chianti in an agritourismo (Casa Nova in Greve-in-Chianti. We caught the bus into Florence-took about an hour to ride in. The bus goes from very early morning until about 8:00 at night (at least it did in 2008) A lot less stressful. However, if you plan on night life in Florence, staying on the outskirts would be a better choice. Have fun.
Thank you so much for all your advice. We have found a hotel just north of Florence which looks perfect. Viva Hotel Meridiana Country in Calenzano. The reviews are excellent and we should be able to get everywhere we want to go easily. Grazie all!!
