Hello, Can anyone recommend a nice, not-too-expensive place to stay in Venice in early July? My husband and I will arrive mid-morning on the boat from Porec, Croatia, stay the night, then fly out the next day - so (sadly!) we won't be there long. Thank you.
What does "not-too-expensive" mean to you?
What does the hotel have to have to be "nice"?
For a intown Venice hotel try Pensione Guerrato. It gets great reviews here. Or, for a more familiar feel you can stay at the one of the more western style hotels in Mestre. Only a short train ride away from Venice and closer to the airport. My very well traveled friend stayed at the Best Western in Mestre and was surprised on how well he liked it.
A couple of well reviewed choices near San Marco.

Americana was wonderful and a very convenient in town location. The building itself was charming and breakfast was included.
Here is the link to Hotel American:
Definitely consider hotel AL Codega check out the website. The pictures are spot on. It is very clean and the staff is great. Typical Italian breakfast buffet.

You are very tardy in finding a hotel in Venice. Rather than trying to contact 6 or 15 different places one at a time, hoping for am answer, use Booking.com. You can see what that site has available for your dates, and they should have a decent representation of what is available in Venice at the time.
One word of caution: stay in Venice proper, do not stay in Mestre to save money. The magic of Venice is Venice!
