accommodations in Tuscany

I will be renting a car and driving through Tuscany may 18-21st and am wondering if I can find accommodations without a reservation. I want to stay in Volterra, Cortona and either Pienza, Montalcino or Montepulciano.

I would highly recom a reservation espec if you have a budget to moderate rate in mind. Most places are small and can be diff to reach with a car. ie. park car then walk many uphill then find hopefully avail.. Split Tuscany region into 2 for the areas you wish to visit and select and reserve via email 2 accomadations that work for you.

Hi Dennis,
Since I already weighed in on your other thread, I was hoping some other people would chime in. Since you just have a ditto fro JS, all I can do is to reaffirm this is much, much harder to do than you can imagine and you would regret not having reservations. Literally finding the accomodations could would be difficult. Family operations don't have continuously operating lobbies/reception areas. Make reservations.

To make your choice, get a guidebook that covers the Tuscan countryside in more detail than RS does. Consider buying the PDF of Tuscan driving itineraries at karenbrown.com that I recommended to Debra. (I didn't recommend it before because I thought you only had one day.)

These resources will help you select the town that you want to stay in. Also VirtualTourist.com is the best online resource to figure out which town appeals to you most. Try Google streetview for more info if possible.

Once you figure out your town, use tripadvisor.com to find a great lodging. Remember within a single hotel the quality of the rooms may vary significantly.

I am reseaching the same thing you are and will be staying in Volterra and will be making a reservation and am almost decided on staying at an agriturismo outside of Montepulciano- using it as a base to go to Pienze, Montalcino and area. Have been to Cortona before. As mentioned in May I would indeed make a reservation. The agriturismo is www.agriturismolecaggiole.it. Safe journey and enjoy. Make sure you pick up a road map at any TI for Tuscany. Safe Journey and enjoy
