We are staying in Rome for one week in October. We are looking for an apartment but know nothing about the various areas. Which are the best for accommodations and which should be avoided. So far the apartments near the Coliseum seem to be less expensive than those near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona. Is that a bad area? We have just begun our search and are not set on any particular area.
Do you have Rick Steves' Rome Guidebook? He does a great job discussing the various neighborhoods and why you might choose one over another. Colosseum, P. Navona, Campo dei Fiori, Termini, Trastevere all have fans. If you find a place that fits your budget, you can check them on Trip Advisor for reviews before you commit.
Thanks Laurel,
I do have his guidebook and will check it out. Great suggestion!
One thing I hardly ever see mentioned in books or message boards is to stay at least a block in from the Tiber. The southern end from the ancient center to the Jewish Ghetto is sketchy after dark and from the Ghetto north, the trees are full of birds that pooh on everything. You'll see the cars wrapped in tarps. If you are just one street over, it's a world of difference. Also, check out the Monti area. That's my favorite place to rent an apartment as it's close to all the sites and it has all the conveniences of a lived in neighborhood.
Thanks Leslie. We were in Atlanta last week for the Film Festival. Judy
